Mix of rural farmland and opportunities for new businesses
Somerset Township is one of the more residential areas in rural Somerset County. The borough has businesses, schools and most homes, while the rest of the township features state game lands, mountains and farmland. Jen Barkman grew up in Somerset and owns Jar the Zero Waste store. “Somerset is a welcoming, small town that’s not really all that small,” Barkman says. “The county population is pretty large, but you get that small-town feel. Everyone is so friendly, and the area is gorgeous, with so many outdoorsy things to do. I adore it.” The township is 29 miles south of Johnstown, and residents can quickly access outdoor destinations like Laurel Hill State Park and Somerset Lake Nature Park. Many people have been residents for generations or moved back to settle down and retire.

Local park, game land and nearby resorts
Aside from the borough, Somerset Township is primarily farmland and uninterrupted nature. Residents and their pets walk the trail at Kimberly Run Natural Area. State Game Lands 050 has unpaved parking areas and a PA Game Commission shooting range along Walters Mill Road for hunters to use before entering the forested area. During the summer, Somerset Lake Nature Park fills with fishing enthusiasts and boaters who sail out on Lake Somerset. The county recently installed a new walking trail and refilled the lake. Jager and Friends Dog Park is close to the lake, with shaded benches and a fenced-in area for dogs to run around.
Laurel State Hill Park and Seven Springs Mountain Resort are the most popular outdoor spots. Visitors from across Western Pennsylvania book reservations at the resort to ski down snowy slopes, hike mountainous trails and experience seasonal events like the Foggy Goggle Summer Concert Series. Laurel State Hill Park is busy year-round, but the over 4,000-acre park is busiest in the summer with hikers, kayakers and campers.

Older homes and large yards
Most homes in Somerset Township were built in the early 1900s or around the 1960s with Cape Cod, split-level or ranch-style designs, and many have three bedrooms and driveways for uncovered parking. Properties within Somerset Borough have moderate yards, but homes farther away are spread out with large lots. Many sell between $100,000 and $385,000, but homes from the early 2000s with sprawling lots can land in the $385,000 to $550,000 range. Manufactured units and homes needing repairs often sell for less than $100,000.

Main Street businesses and chain stores nearby
A mix of chain and locally owned restaurants fill Somerset’s borough and main shopping scene. “I’d say the borough is growing,” says Jenny Harancher, Realtor with Highland Resort Realty who grew up in Somerset County. “I feel like people my age are moving back to the area and want to revamp it. They want to bring in new restaurants and stores. They just opened a pottery studio and other places you’d find in a bigger city.” Barkman's Jar the Zero Waste store is one of the newer businesses on Main Street, and the shop sells organic and refillable products to reduce environmental waste. “I'd say we have about a 50/50 split of returning customers and new people,” Barkman says. “Some people come in to get coffee or refill their detergent, so you get to know their orders. I grew up in Somerset, so I already had a connection to the area, but I’ve met so many new, wonderful people, too.”
Cascio's Fruit Market on Main Street sells fresh produce and gift baskets, and Moo Echo Dairy is a small country store along Glades Pike, stocked with ice cream, candy, jams and baked goods from Amish farms. Ray Azteca Mexican Restaurant has an extensive menu of authentic dishes served for lunch and dinner. Summit Diner opened in 1960 and still features a stainless-steel exterior, black-and-white checkered floor and vinyl stools at the counter. On North Central Avenue, residents shop at Walmart or Giant Eagle Supermarket, or they pop into the brand-new Chubby Chipmunk for lunch.
The Summit Diner is where residents of Lincoln can find a hot breakfast.

Somerset Inc. events attended by thousands
Laurel Arts is a nonprofit organization that operates out of The Philip Dressler Center for the Arts, a repurposed home from the 1830s. Artists of all experience levels visit for classes or to see over 400 pieces displayed in the art gallery. Laurel Arts also organizes the Somerset County Summer Parade every July. The parade down Main Street is one day before Somerset Inc.’s Chalk the Block event. The group also hosts the Fire & Ice Festival every January, where visitors watch sculptors carve ice, go on carriage rides and see exhibits from organizations like the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. Somerset Inc. is also a downtown revitalization organization, and the group has welcomed multiple new businesses, with more set to open soon.

UPMC Somerset’s medical campus is right downtown, and the Somerset Area Ambulance Association has a station near Lake Somerset. Anyone who wants to fly regionally visits the John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport. The Somerset County Transportation System offers as-needed bus services for residents at least 60 years old, certified by the Americans with Disabilities Act or experiencing low income.
