Ball Square blends charm, convenience and local flavor
One of the many squares that collage together to form Somerville, Massachusetts, Ball Square offers a quiet residential pocket without compromising on convenience. Streets lined with traditional architecture provide a neighborhood feel while still putting residents close to local establishments and transportation options. “Overall, Ball Square is one of the more charming squares because it really has everything,” says Steve Bremis, a local broker and owner of Steve Bremis Realty Group. “You have local restaurants, coffee shops, retailers and farm-to-table markets.” Locals are also steps away from recreational hubs like Nathan Tufts Park. Bremis adds that Ball Square is the closest square to Tufts University and offers direct access to the Green Line, which makes the neighborhood especially convenient for those commuting to downtown Boston, about 6 miles away.

Nathan Tufts Park features a historic windmill and green space
The area’s New England charm and history stretches beyond the residential streets to Ball Square’s parks and recreational spaces. The largest park in the neighborhood, Nathan Tufts Park offers short scenic trails along the sloped grounds, which are home to the Old Powder House, a historic stone windmill from the early 1700s. It is the oldest stone building in the state of Massachusetts and was used for gun powder storage during the American Revolution. Nearby Tufts Park and Trum Field have additional outdoor spaces and athletic fields; Tufts Park, located within the Medford city limits, also features a pool and playground along with ball fields. To the south of the neighborhood lies Somerville Community Path, a trail which stretches through the length of the community with stops at pocket parks like Lexington Park, which has a playground.

The neighborhood has an especially high concentration of morning eateries and is lovingly referred to as “Somerville’s Breakfast District.” Bremis says this makes the neighborhood a destination on the weekend. “For breakfast, there is no better place in the entire city,” he says. “These phenomenal places will have lines outside every weekend.” Residents may stop into True Grounds Bakery & Coffee House for a cup of joe before picking up groceries at Tufts Market and Neighborhood Produce or wandering into some of the small shops such as Stereo Jack’s Records.
