Central to Springfield's historic districts
A mile north of Springfield's historic downtown, Lincoln Park is among the city's oldest neighborhoods and is replete with homes to match. Though not the wealthiest community in the state capital, Lincoln Park carries itself with a humble poise that is enhanced by clean streets and tidy, well-renovated historic homes. The surrounding area's historic sites are easily accessible from its central location, and below-average real estate prices make it a cost-effective option for those who frequent downtown.
Lovingly restored historic homes
Streets are flanked by various architectural styles, including bungalows, American Foursquare, and Cape Cods, with many dating back to the end of the 19th century. Lush trees line the well-worn sidewalks, providing a canopy of shade during summer. Homes that lack driveways are often flanked by alleys that lead to small garages and sheds, cutting down on street parking. Prices start in the low $50,000s for structures in need of small amounts of renovation and rise into the mid-$100,000s for fully restored historic homes.

Enjoy the quiet nature in Enos Park
With over 180 acres of trees, gardens and intricately-laid stonework, Oak Ridge Cemetery stands as the largest cemetery in Springfield. The public space is known for its grand assortment of monuments, including the Lincoln Tomb: a 117-foot granite memorial that houses the bodies of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, alongside his wife and three sons. Found a mile south, Enos Park is a 3.5-acre piece of public greenery set within Springfield's oldest neighborhood, which shares its name. Surrounded by historic homes and tall, mature trees, it's a popular hub for locals to appreciate its quiet, bucolic atmosphere while letting the kids scramble around on the central playground.

Washington Middle School's top-rated athletics department
Students can begin their education at McClernand Elementary School, which has a C-plus with Niche. From there, they can attend Washington Middle School, which has a C and maintains an award-winning athletics department. "We also had a new wing added during the 21/22 school year," says Vincent Turner, principal of Washington Middle. "It brought an expanded cafeteria, extra classrooms and new conference spaces." Finally, older students can enroll at Lanphier High School, which scores a C-plus and prides itself on preparing students for whatever future they prefer. "Not everyone goes to college, and that's fine," says Alicia Miller, Lanphier High principal. "But the skills we teach ensure that they have the best opportunities to enter the workforce when they graduate. Our trade program is huge and allows students to take on an apprenticeship right out of school."
