Lincoln Park
Lovingly restored historic homes
Streets are flanked by various architectural styles, including bungalows, American Foursquare, and Cape Cods, with many dating back to the end of the 19th century. Lush trees line the well-worn sidewalks, providing a canopy of shade during summer. Homes that lack driveways are often flanked by alleys that lead to small garages and sheds, cutting down on street parking. Prices start in the low $50,000s for structures in need of small amounts of renovation and rise into the mid-$100,000s for fully restored historic homes.3 miles south of the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport
The Sangamon Mass Transit District provides a bus service that travels throughout Springfield and Sangamon County for a $1.25 fare, with stops on 5th and Eastman Streets. Downtown Springfield and St. John's Hospital are a mile south, while the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is 3 miles northwest.Grab some ribs at CD's BBQ
First established in 1932, Mel-O-Cream Donuts quickly became a Springfield institution for anyone who dreamed of eating a dozen donuts by themselves. Come and get them freshly made by the experts, or order them frozen to be enjoyed later. CD's BBQ offers wood-fired favorites fresh from the smoker, including ribs, pulled pork and banana pudding. Come for their famous Dr. Pepper sauce and stay for seasonal specials, including Thanksgiving turkeys. Chain restaurants and retail options are located along North 9th Street, while the County Market can be found a mile south in Enos Park.Enjoy the quiet nature in Enos Park
With over 180 acres of trees, gardens and intricately-laid stonework, Oak Ridge Cemetery stands as the largest cemetery in Springfield. The public space is known for its grand assortment of monuments, including the Lincoln Tomb: a 117-foot granite memorial that houses the bodies of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, alongside his wife and three sons. Found a mile south, Enos Park is a 3.5-acre piece of public greenery set within Springfield's oldest neighborhood, which shares its name. Surrounded by historic homes and tall, mature trees, it's a popular hub for locals to appreciate its quiet, bucolic atmosphere while letting the kids scramble around on the central playground.Washington Middle School's top-rated athletics department
Students can begin their education at McClernand Elementary School, which has a C-plus with Niche. From there, they can attend Washington Middle School, which has a C and maintains an award-winning athletics department. "We also had a new wing added during the 21/22 school year," says Vincent Turner, principal of Washington Middle. "It brought an expanded cafeteria, extra classrooms and new conference spaces." Finally, older students can enroll at Lanphier High School, which scores a C-plus and prides itself on preparing students for whatever future they prefer. "Not everyone goes to college, and that's fine," says Alicia Miller, Lanphier High principal. "But the skills we teach ensure that they have the best opportunities to enter the workforce when they graduate. Our trade program is huge and allows students to take on an apprenticeship right out of school."See the Illinois State Fair
Since 1853, the Illinois State Fair has been a staple summer event in Springfield, attracting many attendees each year. Covering a vast 366-acre fairground, this 11-day celebration offers a wide array of classic fair food, exciting rides, exhibitions, and live musical performances by top artists like Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean.
