Oak Ridge
Historic Neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois
Sangamon County 62702
19th Century bungalows
The neighborhood's streets are lined on either side with classic examples of bungalows, American Foursquare, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes, many built in the late 19th century. Mature trees follow well-maintained sidewalks, draping the walkways in leafy shade during the warmer months. Alleys are a regular feature, leading to one-car garages, tool sheds and the occasional hobby garden. Prices are well below the Illinois state average, starting in the low $20,000s for houses needing serious restoration and peaking in the low $100,000s for renovated historic homes.
Visit America's 16th President
Crowning the northern border of the community is Oak Ridge Cemetery, the second-most visited cemetery in the U.S. (only Arlington Cemetery can claim more). At over 180 acres, it's the largest cemetery in Illinois. It maintains a wide array of trees, gardens and monuments, including the Lincoln Tomb: a 117-foot granite memorial that houses the bodies of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, along with his wife and three sons. Formerly known as Douglas Park, the recently renamed Duncan Park offers pickleball courts, a disc golf course, playground equipment and a bandshell that hosts live performances throughout the year. Based out of the Edwards Place Historic Home, the Springfield Art Association has offered public galleries, classes, seminars and cultural celebrations since its inception in 1909. "Our classes are the most popular thing we do, with the most interest in more unique mediums — ceramics, glass blowing and metal work," says SAA's executive director, Betsy Dollar. "We're the only place that teaches glass blowing between St. Louis and Chicago."New facilities at Springfield High School
Students in the area can begin their education at Enos Elementary School, which has a C-plus on Niche. From there, they can attend C-ranking Gr Middle School before enrolling in Springfield High School, which has an A. "We broke ground this summer on an extension renovation project that will be the new chapter of SHS history," says Lisa Leardi, principal of Springfield High School. "We're adding a new competition-style gymnasium, enhanced classroom spaces, a redesigned library and many other building-wide improvements."
Live musical acts at the Illinois State Fair
Held every summer since 1853, the Illinois State Fair is one of Springfield's most widely attended events, with hundreds of thousands attending yearly. Set on a fairground that covers over 366 acres, the 11-day celebration features classic fair food, rides, exhibitions and live musical acts like Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean. The Springfield Art Association hosts various local events, including the Molly Schlich International/Independent Film Series, which allows locals to see new and avant-garde works of cinema from all over the world. "There's an art fair that is always the third week in September," says Dollar. "And we have a children's book sale every year, too."
Convenient to Springfield Memorial Hospital
The Sangamon Mass Transit District provides a bus service that travels throughout Springfield and Sangamon County for a $1.25 fare, with stops on Rutledge Street and Elliot Avenue. The Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is 3 miles northwest, and the Springfield Memorial Hospital is in the neighborhood's southern section. Downtown Springfield can be found 1 mile southeast.
Cincinnati-style chilli at Dew Chilli Parlor
Founded in 1909, the Dew Chilli Parlor has been serving up casual pub grub for over 100 years, including cheese curds, wings and nachos. Order their Cincinnati-style Chilli with or without beans, but don't forget that they spell it with an extra "L" in these parts. A collection of chain restaurants and shopping options can be found along Route 97, just south of the neighborhood. County Market and Walgreens can be found in the neighboring community of Enos Park.
Important to know
Due to its proximity to downtown and other high-traffic areas in the city, portions of Oak Ridge can have above-average noise levels, particularly in the southern reaches of the community, where ambulances from the Springfield Memorial Hospital and neighboring St. John's Hospital are particularly active.
