Quiet suburban living north of Lake Springfield
Situated on the outskirts of southwestern Springfield, Westchester is a final stop at old-fashioned suburbia before hitting the greenery and seemingly endless farms that surround Lake Springfield. Well-manicured and quiet, this middle-class neighborhood leaves the fast-paced lifestyle of downtown urban living far behind, opting instead for the creature comforts afforded by public greenspaces and readily available shopping and entertainment.
Modern Craftsman and Split-Levels
With homes primarily constructed in the mid-to-late 20th century, the neighborhood has a settled, modern feel, particularly when compared to older areas closer to the center of town. Clusters of mature oak and maple trees shade the streets and well-manicured front lawns. Double-car driveways with garages to match are common, and many local backyards are fenced in. Ranch-style, split-level, and Contemporary Craftsman homes are some of the most popular styles, with smaller mid-century homes starting at the low $90,000s. Better maintained homes with extra space generally fall between the mid-$100,000s and mid-$200,000s, while the largest craftsman homes can reach the low-$300,000s.
Some of Springfield's best schools
Students can begin their education at Glenwood Elementary School before attending Glenwood Intermediate School. Both schools have a B-plus with Niche and take pride in working with students based on their individual needs. "We believe that all students can learn," says Elizabeth Gregurich, principal of Glenwood Intermediate School. "We use every resource to assure that they do." From there, students can enroll at Glenwood Middle School, which has a B. Finally, older students will attend Glenwood High School. This A-minus ranking institution was recently declared the best high school in the Springfield metro area by the U.S. News & World Report. Students interested in private school education can apply to Our Savior's Lutheran School, which has an A and offers small, tight-knit classes for specialized learning. "We've got one class per grade," says Our Savior's principal, Carmen Yagow. "It's that small!"
Baseball in Lindbergh Park
Centrally located, the 17-acre Lindbergh Park is a hub for many of the area's residents. Families enjoy the park's playground equipment, baseball diamonds and expanses of grass, which make perfect settings for picnics and games of tag. Westchester Park is a "pocket park" in the neighborhood's northeast corner, featuring playground equipment and walking trails.
Fine dining at Indigo
Combining flavors from all over the world, Indigo has been offering locals a modern fine dining experience since its opening in 1998. Both the wine list and the line to get in are long, so make a reservation. Familiar franchises and entertainment are just across Route 4, with Target, Walmart Supercenter and the AMC Classic Springfield 12 less than a mile away.
Live music at the Illinois State Fair
Celebrated every summer since the 1850s, the Illinois State Fair is one of Springfield's most anticipated events. People from all over the state visit the Fairgrounds for classic snacks, rides and live musical acts like Sammy Hagar and Reba McEntire.
Pedestrian-friendly streets
Sidewalks connect most of the neighborhood, making it very pedestrian-friendly for walking the dog, jogging or visiting the park. However, those in need of a shopping trip will find themselves stuck without a car. The Sangamon Mass Transit District is a popular public transportation option and provides bus service throughout Springfield with stops all along Westchester Boulevard.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
