A relaxed country lifestyle draws homebuyers to Stony Point

Surrounded by countryside, Stony Point offers affordability and a slower pace of life outside the small town of Statesville. Homes here are priced well below the national median, making it appealing to first-time homebuyers. Families enjoy access to highly rated public schools, and commuters appreciate having Interstate 40 nearby to reach larger towns and cities, such as Hickory. With local restaurants, cultural events and outdoor adventures ranging from lakeside relaxation to mountain recreation, there’s plenty to do within a 20-mile drive.

Rural and lakeside single-family homes at lower price points

The median sale price in Stony Point is around $265,000, significantly below the national median and that of Statesville and Hickory. “It’s a lot more affordable than other areas,” says Jennifer Martin, a Realtor with Weichert, Realtors - Team Metro. Jon Madison, a Realtor with Madison & Company Realty, agrees. “If you’re looking for a place to settle down or your first home, it’s a great place for that,” he says. “It’s more rural, so if you’re not right off the main road, you have a little bit of space to spread out.” Single-family homes range from century-old bungalows and 1940s cottages to brick ranch-style homes and split-levels, as well as some Craftsman and New Traditional homes from the early 2000s onward. Some properties offer access to Lookout Shoals Lake. Prices start in the mid-$100,000s and can reach the lower $600,000s. There are also manufactured homes from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$300,000s.

Highly rated public schools and several private options nearby

Alexander County Schools is a small district with fewer than 4,300 students across 11 schools. Students typically attend their assigned schools. However, families can request a transfer during a set application window. Stony Point is zoned for highly rated schools, including Stony Point Elementary School, East Alexander Middle School and Alexander Central High School. There are a few private options less than 15 miles away, such as Millersville Christian Academy and Statesville Christian School.

Interstate 40 makes commuting easy

With no public transportation, you’ll need a car if you move to Stony Point. “It’s under a 15-minute drive to I-40, which makes it a great place for commuting,” Martin says. Common destinations include:

  • Taylorsville, around 9 miles or 15 minutes away
  • Statesville, about 12 miles or 20 minutes away
  • Hickory, approximately 30 miles or less than 40 minutes away
  • Charlotte, around 55 miles or 1 hour away

Nearby amenities include local restaurants and a heritage center

Residents can shop and dine in the neighborhood at Dollar General and The Dairy Bar, a long-standing staple for American fare. Nearby towns offer more options. “In Statesville, there’s Katana Kitchen and Village Inn Pizza. Hiddenite has The Yellow Deli, and Hickory has all kinds of stuff,” Madison says. The Hiddenite Arts & Heritage Center is nearby, offering art and music classes, exhibits and special events. Additionally, the annual Carolina BalloonFest, held each October, draws thousands of people to the area to watch hot air balloons fill the sky with vibrant colors.

Outdoor activities range from rock climbing to gemstone mining

“Stony Point is very close to Lookout Shoals Lake, a small lake on the Catawba River,” Madison says. Other nearby parks and recreational spots include:

  • Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area, offering rock climbing, hiking and camping
  • East Alexander Park, featuring baseball fields, a playground and a walking track
  • Emerald Hollow Mine, offering a family-friendly gemstone mining experience
  • Lake Hickory, offering boating, kayaking and fishing opportunities
