Rustic community with suburban growth
Raising chickens in the backyard, sending the kids to A-rated schools and popping over to the local shopping mall are all realities for residents of North Coventry. While this township – 45 miles outside of Philadelphia – mostly consists of rural woodland and homes with acreage, suburban life is beginning to shine through. The two-lane Pottstown Pike is the main artery through town, with narrow and winding back roads branching off. The Schuylkill River that flows along the north side allows for scenic outdoor adventures, and the collection of 19th and 20th-century architecture in this area promotes a classic feel. In fact, the National Park Service added the Pottstown Landing section to the National Register of Historic Places, citing the Victorian and Colonial Revival homes and buildings in this downtown area.
Colonials and rambling ranch homes with acreage
The majority of rural North Coventry are woodsy backroads that lead to tucked-away colonials, Farmhouse Revivals and rambling ranch homes. These secluded single-family homes feature driveways, detached garages and ample yard space, some sitting on multiple acres of land. Properties typically range in size from 2,500 to 6,000 square feet, with prices between $500,000 and upwards of $1 million – depending on the space and acreage. On the north side of the township toward downtown Pottstown, 1,000- to 2,000-square-foot colonial-style twin homes and traditional townhomes can cost from $185,000 to around $350,000.

Hiking through Coventry Woods and along the Schuylkill River
Coventry Woods Park offers almost 700 acres of dense forest and hiking trails. The parks department encourages visitors to keep dogs on leashes and limit the number of cyclists on the trail to ensure the preservation of wildlife. For a longer trail walk, the Schuylkill River Trail can be accessed across the river at Pottstown Riverfront Park. While this section of the trail is about a mile long, there are off-road ways to connect to the longer 75-mile line that runs from Philadelphia to Frackville. “The trail is flat, perfect for jogging or pushing strollers,” says Kathy Cicala, a Realtor with RE/MAX Achievers who lives in neighboring Douglassville. “They’ve been working on parts of it and trying to connect it all.” Nearby, Riverbend Park has a playground and three athletic fields used for club sports and youth leagues. Just east, Kenilworth Park offers more athletic fields and play areas, tennis courts and an 18-hole disc golf course.

The Shoppes and Coventry Parlor
A few convenient establishments can be found along Pottstown Pike, or Pennsylvania Route 100. This main thoroughfare holds North Coventry’s amenities, including the clinics, salons, takeout spots and storefronts at Town Square Plaza and Suburbia Shopping Center. The latter offers a Giant grocery store and Ye Old Coventry Pub, a 19th tavern with wagon wheel light fixtures hanging above its full bar. On the north side in the Pottstown area, the Coventry Mall includes Boscov’s, Kohl’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. “It’s not so much a mall anymore,” says Jennifer Davidheiser, a local Realtor with The Real Estate Professionals. “They’ve turned most of the indoor space into storage, and it’s becoming more of a strip mall that will be called The Shoppes at Coventry.” Across from the mall is the local favorite, Coventry Parlor. This two-story saltbox farmhouse serves ice cream, as well as American breakfast and lunch staples. Near the shopping area, Los Osorio is an authentic Mexican spot, and east in Kenilworth, Giovanni’s has an extensive, classic Italian menu.
Many North Coventry residents head to the Coventry Parlor for ice cream on hot, summer days.
Although much of North Coventry is rural, folks are never far away from retail centers.

Downtown’s trendy High Street
North of the township, downtown Pottstown is starting to attract foodies and a hip crowd. “We’re seeing values go right up in the surrounding neighborhoods because of downtown,” says Davidheiser. “There’s a change happening.” This transformation includes new establishments like The Blue Elephant, an Asian Fusion restaurant inside a former bank adorned with blue velvet booths. JJ Ratigan Brewing Company is a pub with a full dining menu. “They do karaoke, and downstairs there’s a pool table and shuffleboard, while up another set of stairs is an axe throwing place,” Cicala says. “And across the street from JJ Ratigan’s, there’s a beer garden that does live music.”
Markets and festivals in Pottstown
In addition to popular eateries, High Street hosts the Pottstown Farmers Market on Saturdays from May through October. Other events held in the Pottstown area of North Coventry include Easter egg hunts and Arts in the Park, an annual celebration of local artists at Riverfront Park. “The downtown Pottstown area is more densely populated, so a lot more happens there,” Davidheiser says.
Car-dependent North Coventry roads
Residents are about 45 miles west of Philadelphia via Interstate 76, easily accessed by U.S. Route 422, which runs along the north side of town. Getting around North Coventry will likely require a vehicle, but there are a few Pottstown Area Rapid Transit bus stops near the Coventry Mall area.
