Convenient location a primary factor of Westwynde’s appeal
The Westwynde neighborhood sits between Windsor Street and the similar Shonas Highlands neighborhood in Sun Prairie, a suburb northeast of Madison. “It’s really about the convenience,” says Stuart Meland, a broker with Mad City Homes. “The west side of Sun Prairie now pushes right up against Madison, so you can get just about anywhere on the whole north side of the city in just a couple of minutes.” Proximity to shopping, commuting, school and parks, plus varied architecture in a maturing neighborhood, are primary draws for Westwynde residents. “It’s one of those quintessential suburban communities,” Meland says.
Architectural diversity on spacious lots
Largely built in the 1990s, homes and lots in Westwynde can be large. “The lots are a little larger than a normal city construction lot today,” says Kathy Abraham, a broker and Realtor with Stark Company Realtors. The varied architecture includes Colonial Revival, New Traditional and ranch-style homes. Prices can range from $450,000 to $780,000, with most being in the $500,000 to $650,000 range. The neighborhood has a few outlying properties over 7,000 square feet, valued at nearly $2 million. Westwynde homes typically feature attached garages and have sidewalks lining the streets.

Certified Nursing Assistant program among options at Sun Prairie West High School
Students in Westwynde can attend Royal Oaks Elementary, which scores an A-minus from Niche, before moving on to Prairie View Middle School, which earns a B-plus. Sun Prairie West High scores a B. West High is new, having opened in 2022, making Sun Prairie a community with two high schools for the first time. “It’s growing so fast they had to build a second high school, which is a good indicator of the demand around here,” Meland says. Sun Prairie West offers AP classes and dual credit options through Madison College, including a Certified Nursing Assistant licensing program.
Royal Oaks Elementary School has a great academic program with an overall A- rating on Niche.
Sun Prairie West High School has approximately 1,400 enrolled students from the surrounding area.

Facilities for all ages at Westwynde Park
Residents can head to the neighborhood’s Westwynde Park to enjoy play equipment for all ages, plus basketball and sand volleyball courts. Orfan Park, a few blocks north, has a playground, a picnic area, tennis courts, and a bike path that slices through it and connects with the network of trails around the community. Token Creek Conservancy is about 3 miles away for nature hikes and wildlife sightings. A little farther west, about 5 miles from Westwynde, Token Creek County Park offers a 27-hole disc golf course.

Fish fry, brunch and live music at Buck and Honey’s
Sun Prairie’s rapid growth is evident on the city's west side, particularly along Grand Avenue. “Grand Avenue is loaded with absolutely everything,” Meland says. Costco, Target and Woodman’s Food Market cluster among Menards, a home improvement store, a T.J. Maxx, a Bass Pro Shop and many chain restaurants. For locally owned dining, Abraham recommends Buck and Honey’s, which serves upscale pub fare, a Friday fish fry and weekend brunch. They also host live music and offer discounted wine on Wednesdays. Swagat offers Indian cuisine, also on the west side. For groceries, residents can hit Woodman’s along Grand Avenue, or the slightly closer Metro Market on Windsor and Grand.

Convenient location, bike paths and the Madison Metro bus
Location is a primary draw for Westwynde residents. Downtown Madison is under 13 miles away south on U.S. Route 151, which becomes East Washington Avenue and runs right to the Capitol Square in Madison. University of Wisconsin Health’s East Madison Hospital is about 6 miles away. The Dane County Regional Airport is just over 10 miles away. “We’ve got tons of bike paths running through the neighborhood,” Abraham says. “You can get around pretty well on your bike.” The Madison Metro bus now runs through Sun Prairie. “There are quite a few stops now," Abraham says. “It’s not like every other block, but one stop is right in front of Westwynde on Windsor Street.”
Eighty tons of Wisconsin corn at the Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival
Sun Prairie hosts events throughout the year. “Downtown Sun Prairie has a farmers market every Saturday morning through the summer, and then in colder months, it moves indoors to the West Side Community Services Building,” Abraham says. “It’s a great little farmer’s market.” Larger events include a Groundhog’s Day celebration and the Sweet Corn Festival each August, where participants consume 80 tons of Wisconsin-grown sweet corn during the five-day festival.
