Nature-enriched Hubert offers access to recreation near Camp Lejeune

Hubert’s sandy shoreline often features stunning waterfront sunrises along the Atlantic coast, about 8 miles from Swansboro. The neighborhood is predominantly residential with many natural access points, from creeks fed by the ocean to forested terrain and a beachfront. “It’s a little town along this chain of towns that we call the ‘Crystal Coast.’ A lot of it backs up to the Camp Lejeune military base, so some of the base is the beach, but we do have water access there,” says Emily Isenhart, a Realtor with Realty One Group Navigate with four years of experience. “It’s a good mix of people; some must be out here because they’re being deployed, or their next duty station is at Camp Lejeune. Other people are coming back because, at one point, they were here, and they want to retire here. We also have influences from Raleigh, which is over 2 hours away, so they’re looking at second home beach houses.”

Boating, Bear Island’s beach and parks

Hubert has various natural playgrounds, such as Queen Creek, to which many area properties have private access. The Shell Rock Landing Access Area and Willis Landing Boat Access Area are both open to the public. Hammocks Beach State Park is nearby with paddle trails and over 2 miles of hiking trails. The park has a ferry that travels to Bear Island from May through October. Since there is no dedicated bridge to the island, only watercrafts can access it. “Bear Island is more of a rustic beach experience. They’ve got bathrooms, but it’s pristine,” Isenhart says. Swansboro Municipal Park has various ballfields, a skate park and a playground with climbing rock structures.

Houses and townhouses inland, on the creek and the oceanfront

Many streets are residential, some have ranch-style homes, which range from $70,000 to $420,000, and others have New Traditional houses, which go for $230,000 to $670,000, some with Colonial or cottage features and can vary as single- and multistory builds. Many front lawns may have a ditch at the end of their driveways with storm drainage pipes to alleviate potential flooding. Contemporary homes along the waterfront go for $230,000 and up to $1.9 million, depending on whether properties are located along the creek or sitting oceanfront. Townhouses in the area are priced between $160,000 and $330,000.

Events downtown and the Mullet Festival of North Carolina

Downtown Swansboro hosts various events throughout the year, including the Independence Day Celebration and Pirate Fest on the second Saturday of May. The Mullet Festival of North Carolina began as a downtown potluck celebration for the completion of the White Oak River Bridge in 1954 and has since become the oldest festival on the Crystal Coast. Held during the second weekend in October, it serves as a blessing for boat owners who have passed and marks the start of a two-day celebration with live music and artisan vendors. The event is named after a common fish in this area, which fed many workers who helped construct the bridge.

Downtown Swansboro and dining on Sand Ridge Road

Central thoroughfares house various restaurants, including Sandridge Diner and Monster’s Pizza on Sand Ridge Road. “Caino’s BBQ at the Red Barn is where you eat lunch, if you’re going out on the boat,” Isenhart says. Eastern North Carolina-style barbeque and Texas-style brisket are served on trays in the restaurant’s rustic dining room. Swansboro has a Food Lion and locally owned shops downtown, including Silver Line jewelry store and Poor Man’s Hole antique store. “Preston’s Corner Bar and Grill has their flair on American cuisine, but the food is always good. You can see the water from it, and it’s in historic downtown Swansboro,” she says. “Bake Bottle Brew has great coffee, beer and wine. They have a balcony, and you can sit and watch the boats go by. The kids can get ice cream there too, so it’s a fun place.”

Schools in Onslow County and extracurricular activities

The Onslow County Schools district serves Hubert. Some students may attend Sand Ridge Elementary School, which Niche gives a B grade overall. Swansboro Middle School, where they may go next, receives a B-plus. Swansboro High School maintains a B and offers extracurricular activities, including the art club and the national honor society.

North Carolina highways, proximity to Camp Lejeune and airport access

Freedom Way, also known as North Carolina Highway 24, connects Hubert to Swansboro in the East and Jacksonville within about a 12-mile drive West. Albert J. Ellis Airport is approximately 30 miles away via Freedom Way, and it only has direct flights to Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina. A Camp Lejeune checkpoint is about 5 miles away on North Carolina Highway 172.
