Hilltop is an urban residential neighborhood situated 1 mile west of downtown Tacoma. Shawn Dagan is a realtor with John L. Scott Dupont who has sold houses in the Tacoma area for the past 7 years. “Hilltop excellent value, it’s impossible to find prices like these for homes of this caliber in Seattle,” Dagan says. With a median price of $420,000, Hilltop is below the Tacoma market average, making it relatively affordable. Modern Craftsman houses are the dominant style, while most properties are built on rectangular lots that put houses close to each other. Edna Travis Park, formerly known as McCarver Park, is located in the southeastern corner of the neighborhood. The park is home to the Zina Linnik Playground, named in honor of a fallen student. The playground has a tetherball court and a reading circle area. The park also features a popular paved walking loop and a well-kept community garden. New businesses and neighborhood mainstays
MLK Jr. Way is the neighborhood's central hub of entertainment, retail and dining. Manifesto Coffee is a micro-roastery and locally owned coffee shop. Known for its small-batch, hand-roasted coffee, the cafe also partners with local bakeries to provide breakfast pastries. The Zodiac Supper Club is a newcomer to the area. This quirky, eclectic spot is known for it’s shrine of David Bowie and art deco oil lamps. Customers can enjoy creative handcrafted cocktails while grilling their own steak or burger tableside. There are also plenty of established neighborhood offerings, like Quickie Too, the first vegan restaurant in Tacoma. Even though it's been open for nearly 30 years, dinner rush still brings a line that stretches out the door. Regarding Quickie Too, a local resident remarked, “I need it. Give it to me, give it to me now!” Johnson Candy Company is another beloved Hilltop staple. Open since 1925, this family-owned candy shop specializes in handmade candies, chocolates and confections.
