Channel District
Eclectic restaurants and shops in Channelside
Channelside's condos are a short walk from its shopping and dining options, all of which share a richness of character. Ginger Beards Coffee, for instance, offers pints of nitro-cold brew that will be chugged by the owners, Josh and Derek, should anyone ask them. Artful murals adorn the walls of Bamboozle, which dishes out Vietnamese and Asian fusion dishes. Take-out food, live music, and bowling are available at Sparkman Wharf, part of the Channelside Bay Plaza Mall. The mall features a beer garden and plenty of space to relax and enjoy its various food vendors. Locals can buy staple groceries at the Publix Super Market at Channel Club.High-rise condominiums close to shops and transit
"When I have clients who want a downtown vibe, I bring them to Channelside," says Lorryn Gavin, a Tampa local and Broker for OutFast Realty. Concrete walkways lead under highrise condominiums, providing residents with views of the sparkling bay waters and the Tampa skyline. The area has some of the most expensive housing markets in the city, ranging from $350,000 for condos with 1,000 square feet or less to $900,000 for larger condos and into the million dollar range for luxury residences.Urban parks and museums within walking distance
Residents easily walk and jog around the district, often passing by urban park spaces such as Madison Street Park. Visitors can tee up around the pickleball court or run the small grass space with their dogs. While not a regular stomping ground for residents, the Florida Aquarium attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly. The facility holds over 20,000 different aquatic species, offers dolphin-watching charters and educational camps on wildlife conservation. A walk across the pier leads to the American Victory Ship and Museum, a 1940s-era ship containing artifacts, equipment and exhibits related to the history of US naval warfare. The Tampa Bay History Center is another nearby museum with exhibits detailing the history of Tampa Bay.The Channel District's light-rail and public transit
"It's very walkable; some people here don't even have cars, lots of people walk, and some people scooter," says John Morgan. "Lots of people jog to fitness centers, and people take the light rail, too." Three light-rail stops along Channelside Drive offer quick transit north to south along Downtown Tampa proper, which is less than two miles away, and nearby freeways put residents within 10 miles of Tampa International Airport.Magnet programs at Hillsborough County Public Schools
Residents are served by the Hillsborough County Public Schools district. The local school pipeline begins in Ybor City at Washington Elementary, which holds a C-plus rating on Niche. Students move on to Madison Middle and Howard W. Blake High School, which have a B-minus and B-rating on Niche, respectively. The high school has a range of magnet programs emphasizing the arts, including dance, visual arts and creative writing.Cruise ships, crowds and storm surge mitigation
Cruise ships floating down the Ybor Channel are a typical occurrence, as the neighborhood is home to Port Tampa Bay and the main departure point for local and Caribbean cruises. With the Aquarium and nearby museums, it goes without saying that a lot happens in Channelside; as John Morgan IV says, "It can get pretty crowded when you have a cruise ship departing or a concert, but there are big enough parking lots, and it's just a regular city neighborhood most of the time." The area has a high hurricane and flood risk and experienced significant storm surges during Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Idalia. Tampa has received millions of dollars in federal funding for stormwater and flood mitigation projects.Crime
The area has a CAP Index Crime Score of 8 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. However, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has reported a notable decrease in overall crime in 2023 thanks to its new Auto Theft Task Force and Walk It Talk It, a community engagement program that considers unique community dynamics in its crime prevention efforts.
