Fair Oaks
Suburban Neighborhood in Tampa, Florida
Hillsborough County 33611
Condos and mid-20th century stylings with add-ons
A walk along most of Fair Oaks' narrow residential streets can feel like a trip back to the 1950s, with a hefty supply of housing options being ranchers built between 1951 and 1959. Some have grown their original square footage with add-ons. A few new builds have also increased the average square footage, creating start contrast on some blocks. "There's a mixture of homes in this area, which is a unique thing for South Tampa, because people kind of know that it's not uncommon to have a small house next to a big house these days," Weston says. Most of the neighborhood's single-family ranchers maintain an overall old school American standard. And yet, some break the uniform patterns of design with unique elements like gravel yards, neon-colored mailboxes or lawn ornaments. "We don't have HOA dues here, so people kind of have some freedom to do the things they like to do," Weston says. Towards the edge of the neighborhood, condominiums and townhouses typically sell for between $120,000 and $325,000. Single-family options meanwhile sell for between $300,000 to $650,000, although some have sold for close to $1 million.Stingray sightings at AJ Palonis Jr. Park
The only park located in Fair Oaks is Foster Park, which offers a place for local kids to play pickup basketball or meetup with friends for playground activities. There are lots of options a short distance away, such as AJ Palonis Jr. Park, where locals go to catch fish and watch stingrays drift through the shallow waters below the Gandy Bridge. Directly east of Fair Oaks, the South Tampa Family YMCA offers a near-endless schedule of classes and programs for visitors of all ages, including martial arts classes, Developmental Leagues for volleyball and basketball, summer camps, and afterschool care. But some locals go there just to swim laps or ride waterslides at the facility's pools.Walkable schools and new K-8 campuses
For now, students in Fair Oaks begin school at Anderson Elementary, rated B by Niche. Some students walk to school every morning, depending on where in the neighborhood they live. While some streets lack sidewalks, improvements are ongoing because of a new school being built in Fair Oaks. The ultra-modern campus of Kenneth E. Adum K-8, a public magnet school, is expected to open by August 2024 and has already brought additional sidewalks on Bay Villa Avenue. For grades 6-8, students attend Madison Middle School, rated B-minus, then move on to the A-rated Robinson High for grades 9-12.Congregations for golf and bingo
Most events in Fair Oaks are put together by local institutions. Monthly book discussions at the Jen Kaminis Regional Library, or group exercise classes at the South Tampa Family YMCA are just a few of the ways locals socialize while keeping their minds and bodies active. Several churches throughout Fair Oaks and its surrounding areas offer social opportunities as well. "The church we go to is Grace Family Church, and they do a lot of things with the community," Weston says, referring to activities such as bible studies and volunteer opportunities. New Beginnings Christian Church and St. Patrick's Catholic Church host frequent events as well, including golf outings and bingo dinners.Highway connections to Tampa, St. Petersburg downtowns
A December 2017 project extending the Selmon Expressway made it even easier to commute from Fair Oaks to the downtowns of St. Petersburg and Tampa. Now with direct connections to the Gandy Bridge, drivers can make trips from Fair Oaks all the way to the Brandon Mall without stopping at a single red light on Gandy Boulevard. "That was a big deal," Weston says. "They had neighborhood associations that were fighting it for a long time. And finally, they agreed to build it like 30 feet high, so it wouldn't block the businesses on Gandy Boulevard." But traffic slowdowns are still common, especially during peak commuting hours. For an alternative, some residents rely on bus routes surrounding the neighborhood.
Build your own plate at Vino E Pasta
Gandy Boulevard is the main commercial strip of Fair Oaks. Most trips to grocery stores, restaurants, and other retail options pull residents south to the 2.5-mile cut across the peninsula. From one end to the other, residents can find a healthy mix of chain and locally owned businesses, including two Publix locations less than a mile apart. Gandy Boulevard is also where locals go to get creative at Vino E Pasta, known for its build-your-own pasta options and trattoria-style atmosphere. Across the street, the no frills eatery of Casa Mexicana Bar & Grill is the kind of place where staff members "get to know you by name," Weston says. "You don't find that too much anymore." Meanwhile, the vintage-themed Dairy Joy pulls cars off Manhattan Avenue to its drive-thru for sweet treats.
