West of downtown Taunton, Massachusetts Route 140 follows the Three Mile River to the very edge of the city. Here, where the streets are winding and surrounded by old-growth trees, is the relaxed suburb of Oakland. “It’s so quiet and peaceful,” says Kathleen Humphrey, broker and owner of Humphrey Realty Group. “The house I sold there was in such a special spot, right on the Three Mile River. It’s a wooded area with lots of beautiful wildlife, and it’s just gorgeous when the leaves start changing in fall.” Residents of this neighborhood can get an “away-from-it-all feel” while being just a couple of miles from Taunton’s city center, with all its parks, restaurants and events.

Taunton houses with acreage
In Oakland, the suburban landscape gives way to winding, wooded roads on the cusp of farmland. There’s plenty of room to spread out, with homes on lots ranging from 0.25 acres to 1 or 2 acres of land. The Three Mile River winds through the neighborhood and flows into Sheppards Factory Pond, with houses on the waterfront priced at a premium for their scenic views. Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals sit tucked off one-lane roads, with lawns dotted by mature evergreens and maples. Even new construction homes tend to be inspired by classic Colonial Revival features. These single-family homes are priced from $330,000 to $775,000; however, mobile homes in 55-plus communities, such as Radante Estates, list between $185,000 to $250,000.

Aquatic adventures on the river and indoor sports at Fore Kicks
The Three Mile River, which runs through the center of the neighborhood and spans nearly 14 miles across three towns, provides outdoor aquatic recreation. “You’ll see lots of rowboats and kayaking,” says Humphrey. “Maybe a small motorboat every once in a while.” In some sections, the river also provides pet-friendly out-and-back trails. The crack of baseball bats and cheering crowds from Friedman Middle’s ballfield complex are heard as the Taunton Western Little League and the Taunton Girls Softball League play. Other aspiring athletes can register to play at the nearby Fore Kicks Indoor and Outdoor Sports Complex. “Fore Kicks is huge, and they do soccer, field hockey, basketball, flag football — pretty much everything,” says Cyndi Arpin, a Taunton resident and Realtor with Brownstone Realty Group. This robust sporting facility also has adult leagues and daily rates for open play or use of the driving range. To get out on the greens, golfers head to John F. Parker Golf Course just south of the neighborhood to play nine holes.

Downtown Taunton features shopping, dining and holiday events
Oakland is almost entirely residential. Aside from a Dunkin’ and a gas station along Massachusetts Route 140, most residents head east toward Taunton’s charming downtown district for shopping, dining and entertainment. Near Tremont Street, Trucchi’s Supermarkets provides grocery essentials, and there are a few places to grab lunch and dinner. A-1 Pizza is popular for pickup or delivery, while Fratelli’s Bakery and Café specializes in sweet confections and morning pick-me-ups. There’s more to do downtown, where locally owned shops, performing arts centers and eclectic restaurants fan out around the Taunton Green. Most of the city’s events and its famous Christmas lights are hosted here, right in the heart of Taunton. “They call it the Lighting of the Green,” Arpin says. “People come from all over to see it; it’s always on the Friday before the Christmas Parade. The parks department does a great job decorating it, and there’s a different theme every year. They cover the green in these large structures strung up with lights, and then the mayor turns them on all at once,” Arpin continued. “All the restaurants and businesses nearby participate, so you’ll see carolers, face painting and all kinds of vendors.”
Just minutes from Oakland, enjoy a family walk in Downtown Taunton's shops and restaurants.

Hop on Masschusetts Route 140 to get downtown
Massachusetts Route 140 runs straight through the neighborhood and serves as its main thoroughfare, connecting to downtown Taunton about 2 to 5 miles southeast near Morton Hospital. Both U.S. Highway 44 and Massachusetts Route 138 also meet at Taunton’s city center, with the latter connecting to Interstate 495 to the north. Providence lies approximately 20 to 25 miles to the east and is home to attractions such as Roger Williams Park Zoo plus Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport. Boston is roughly 38 to 42 miles north. “It’s no more than 10 to 20 minutes to a major highway pretty much no matter where you are,” Humphrey says. The Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority operates bus stops on Norton Avenue, but most residents need a car to navigate this suburban area.
