Taylorsville offers country living in Spencer County

Taylorsville is nestled in the rolling hills of Spencer County, offering a peaceful, country setting with easy access to nature. Houses are set on spacious lots that offer both space and privacy, while Taylorsville Lake is nearby for outdoor and water recreation. “It’s a great community for families,” says Monica Dunlap, broker and owner of Totally About Houses, who has over 10 years of experience. “The schools are great, and the community offers lots of sports programs for kids. Homes here have more land and are more affordable than in Louisville. You're in the country, but you are surrounded by larger cities like Louisville, Mount Washington and Shelbyville.” The area’s CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, below the national average of 4.

Taylorsville has a diverse housing mix and spacious lots

Neighborhoods in Taylorsville often have a suburban feel, with houses set on grassy, open lawns and winding streets that end in cul-de-sacs. Many roads are lined with sidewalks, and mature trees dot the hills. Taylorsville homes range from historical cottages and classic ranch-style homes to New Traditional properties. Single-family homes typically fall between $200,000 and $500,000, with larger lots providing space and privacy. “There are lots of new builds going up,” Dunlap says. “Most subdivision homes are on acre or acre-plus lots. There are some smaller quarter-acre lots that are linked to the public sewer, but homes with more than one acre are typically on private septic.”

Spencer County schools serve Taylorsville

The community is served by Spencer County Public Schools. Primary schools include Taylorsville Elementary School and Spencer County Elementary School, which get a B-plus and a B grade from Niche, respectively. Spencer County Middle School earns a B-minus. Spencer County High School rates a B and offers dual credit and Advanced Placement courses, as well as career pathway programs in architecture, finance, public administration and hospitality.

Taylorsville Lake Park offers trails, campsites and boating

Taylorsville has plenty of ways to get outside. Ray Jewell Memorial Park has sports fields and a play area, and Spencer County Fairgrounds hosts seasonal festivals and community events. Just a few miles away, Taylorsville Lake State Park spans over 3,000 acres and features a 24-mile trail network, campsites and a well-stocked lake. Other popular activities at the park include birding and boating.

Shopping and dining options along Taylorsville Road

Restaurants and businesses are concentrated around the main thoroughfare, Taylorsville Road. Fiesta Mexicana serves Mexican-American classics and margaritas, and Lynda's Grill has homestyle American food and homemade pies. Groceries and daily essentials are available at Country Mart, Taylorsville Butcher Block and Dollar General. Larger big-box and department stores like Walmart are in Louisville.

Distance to urban centers such as Louisville and Shepherdsville

Kentucky routes 44 and 55 pass through the community, offering access to larger cities like Shepherdsville, about 25 miles away. Louisville and Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport are approximately 35 miles northwest, and University of Louisville Health-Shelbyville Hospital is about 20 miles away.

Events and celebrations in Spencer County

Taylorsville has been home to the Spencer County Octoberfest for about 100 years, which features pageants, live entertainment, games for children, local vendors and a parade. Other celebrations include a festival for July Fourth, a county-wide food festival in September and the annual Taylorsville Progressive Dinner, where people can sample restaurants on Main Street and have a meal in the chamber of commerce building.
