North Temple tethers quiet living to economic anchors

From multi-acre properties off dirt roads to polished suburban-style subdivisions, North Temple is a wide-ranging area with an equally wide variety of housing options. Across this central Texas community in the city of Temple, you can find homes ranging in age from over 80 years old to those that are brand new. The mutual benefit is proximity to Interstate 35 and major job hubs, including the Temple Industrial Park, the Olin E. Teague Veterans' Medical Center, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple, and Fort Hood. . Teague Veterans' Medical Center, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple, and Fort Hood.

Options include acreage along country roads and newer subdivisions

Some of North Temple’s homes, particularly in the area’s more rural pockets, date back to the 1940s. Many of the area’s older houses come with at least a couple of acres, along seemingly endless country roads. Buyers eyeing something more modern and traditional have plenty of options as well. Subdivisions like Tanglewood and Oak Ridge feature recently built homes that sit closely together on neighborhood blocks. Some Tanglewood houses come with views of Belton Lake, too. “That’s been predominantly the older part of the city,” says Mary Jane Roach, who’s the owner of Temple-based Mary Jane Roach Realty and has over 20 years of real estate experience. “But it’s now regenerating itself, because of the growth of the industrial park and the growth around I-35. So that’s the reason you’ve got a lot of new subdivisions moving into that area.”

Many of the houses around North Temple are ranch- or New Traditional-styles. Sale prices range anywhere from the mid-$100,000s to mid-$800,000s in most cases, with acreage and condition the big factors in price. Some properties have HOA fees, from $20 to $40 per month.

Temple schools feature a variety of electives

The Temple Independent School District serves this area. Students in this part of the city are close to campuses including Lamar Middle School, where they can take electives in topics like health sciences and manufacturing. The district’s Temple High School has a fine arts department with programs in band, choir, dance, orchestra, theatre arts and visual arts. The Temple ISD offers limited school choice, allowing in-district and out-of-district transfer requests rather than systemwide open enrollment. Approval is based on campus capacity and administrative review rather than a lottery.

Residents benefit from easy access to highways, employers and care

Interstate 35 bisects North Temple, providing quick access to more populated parts of the region. “The biggest draw would be the accessibility to I-35,” Roach says of the area. “It’s very accessible if you’re going to Waco from there. You can get on the interstate very easily. Or if you’re going to Fort Hood or Killeen, or whether you’re going to the Austin area. Once you’re there, the accessibility is very, very good.” Waco, Killeen and Fort Hood are all just over 30 miles away. Fort Hood is one of the world’s biggest military installations, with roughly 40,000 soldiers. Locals don’t even have to get on the interstate to reach the nearby Temple Industrial Park, which includes distribution centers for Walmart and H-E-B. Those in North Temple who are employed by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple or the Olin E. Teague Veterans' Medical Center are less than 20 miles from work. The two medical centers have a combined total of almost 1,600 beds. “The medical care here is above and beyond what is available in many areas,” Roach says.

Where to eat, drink and shop in and around North Temple

The majority of the city’s restaurants are located south of this area, but there’s still a handful of choices here. Some of the places to grab a bite to eat or a drink in North Temple include:

  • 3 Texans Winery and Vineyard, which has 5,000 grapevines on site and hosts food trucks on the weekends
  • The Big Chill Beer Barn, a drive-through spot where you can pick up a frozen daiquiri, a six-pack, and an order of pizza and wings
  • El Potosino, a food truck that’s known for its tacos and has a covered seating area
There’s also a Buc-ee's close by for quick pick-ups. A Walmart off Adams Avenue is one of the closest full-service supermarkets. Residents around North Temple are within 20 miles of the Temple Mall, too, where there are stores like Dillard’s, Bath & Body Works, and Hibbett Sports.

Belton Lake and nearby parks offer plenty of outdoor recreation

Temple sits adjacent to the massive Belton Lake, which stretches well over 12,000 acres. “It’s always been a draw,” Roach says of the 19 square mile body of water. There are multiple spots to access the lake in the area, including:

  • Cedar Ridge Park, where there are 68 campsites, a boat ramp, a playground and a beach where you can swim
  • Hidden Canyon Park, which is a tranquil place to go for a walk or enjoy lunch by the water
  • McGregor Park, a spot boasting over 60 picnic sites, two boat ramps, a beach and a playground
North Temple is also not too far from the 260-acre Crossroads Park, where there are seven soccer fields, four baseball and four softball fields, eight batting cages, six tennis courts and a 27-hole disc golf course.
