Boating, butterflies and birds at Cook Family Park
Stretching across 79 acres of riparian, mixed forest and grassy habitats, Cook Family Park is Tigard’s largest park. A boat ramp descends into the Tualatin River, which supports species like great blue heron, great egrets, northern harrier and bald eagles, as well as fish, for which anglers need a permit to cast a line. Kayaks and canoes are available for rent, as well as picnic shelters large enough to accommodate 250 people near barbecue grills. “Cook Park is an amazing park,” says Jennifer Stiffler, the administrator of the nearby Summerfield Civic Association. “It’s a nature park, so the walking paths are very popular. They can go for miles, and they have a dedicated butterfly garden with native plants that attract bees and butterflies.”The Tigard Swim Center has a 25-yard heated indoor pool with six lanes, where instructors host swimming lessons and aerobic exercise classes. Residents can pay a daily admission rate or sign up for monthly or yearly passes. South of the neighborhood, the Tualatin Country Club boasts the 2022 Oregon Golf Association’s “Facility of the Year” title for its remarkably fast greens and tight fairways. However, the course is only available to club members.
Pick’s Landing and Royal Mobile Villas
Many single-family homes in the neighborhood belong to Pick’s Landing, a homeowners association with monthly fees of about $20. One- and two-story bungalows with features that recall Craftsman architecture were mostly built throughout the 1980s, fetching between $515,000 and $700,000.Royal Mobile Villas, a 55-and-up manufactured home community, is tucked to the southwest of the neighborhood. A residence comes with access to the community pool, a putting green, a gym with a sauna and a billiards room, among other amenities, with weekly and monthly events at the clubhouse. Most homes in the community were built throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, ranging from $30,000 to $160,000 with monthly lot rents of around $825 and above.
Yearly Tigard Festival of Balloons
Nearly two dozen multicolored hot air balloons soar into a dusky sky every June from the Cook Family Park grounds as part of the Tigard Festival of Balloons, a tradition for 40 years. After the initial ascent—which happens before sunrise—attendees can enjoy tethered balloon rides, food from local eateries, carnival games and rides, live music, a car show as well as craft and vendor booths.Internships and career exploration at Tigard High School
