Jack Park
Jack Park’s two playgrounds and community garden
Jack Park is the neighborhood’s central green space and has a basketball court and two playgrounds—one designed for toddlers from 2 to 5 years old, and a second for kids 5 to 12. Next to one of the playgrounds, those with a green thumb maintain fruits and vegetables at the Jack Park Community Garden, though plot reservations tend to fill up. Windmill Park is one of the neighborhood's smaller green spaces, composed of a bench, a bus stop and a windmill built in 1909, symbolizing the community’s agricultural origins.Summerlake Park stretches across 30 acres in the north of the neighborhood, encompassing a picnic shelter, pickleball, tennis and basketball courts, a ballfield and two playgrounds. "Summerlake Park is right down the street from my family and me, and we spend time there when the weather is nice," says Karen Pinto, the assistant property manager of Sunflower Apartments. Towering evergreens and their needle-covered branches hover over the park’s lake, providing shade for the ducks, Canadian geese, herons and otters that live near it. Designated fishing areas line the lake’s northern bank, and vibrant rhododendrons border the walking trails that surround the water. The Summerlake Dog Park is equipped with benches for dog owners to rest while their pups play.
Ranch-style and contemporary homes from the 1970s
Ranch-style homes built throughout the 1970s line the streets between Jack and Summerlake parks, ranging from $500,000 to $575,000. Contemporary builds constructed throughout the 1970s and the 1980s come on larger lots, allowing room for gardens or recreational vehicle parking and fetching between $650,000 and $725,000. Jack Park’s residential streets are peppered with old-growth trees—indicative of how long the neighborhood has been around—though several new traditional bungalows sprung up in the neighborhood during the 1990s. Properties that come on land around a third of an acre in size are also on the market between $830,000 and $890,000.Eclairs, macarons and a miniature vineyard at La Provence
Jack Park is conveniently near two shopping centers. Directly north of the neighborhood, a Whole Foods Market is surrounded by local and chain eateries, including the McMenamins Greenway Pub. A quirky Portland-area chain with more locations throughout Oregon and Washington, the pub serves burgers and beer in a mood-lit interior with pool tables and a fluorescent blue fish tank. Progress Ridge TownSquare is west of the neighborhood with another Portland-original chain: La Provence Boulangerie & Patisserie. Croissants, pain au chocolat, brioche, colorful macarons and iced eclairs glisten inside a glass display case, and guests can enjoy their favorite sweets on the patio, which overlooks a miniature vineyard in front of the shopping center’s lake. The bakery shares a parking lot with New Seasons Market.Engineering and design program at Tigard High
Elementary school-aged children in the neighborhood may enroll in Mary Woodward Elementary School before moving forward to Fowler Middle School. Both schools earn A-minus grades from Niche, as does Tigard High School, which offers International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificate programs. Additionally, it maintains an extensive engineering and design program, equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, metrology tools and the SolidWorks computer-aided design software. Courses in the program include Robotics 1 and 2, as well as a capstone, and the department has partnered with local industry leaders like LAM Research.Southwest Scholls Ferry Road north of the neighborhood
Southwest Scholls Ferry Road, a significant thoroughfare in the area, is just north of Jack Park. The road continues east until it merges with Oregon state Route 217, often referred to as the Southwest Beaverton-Tigard Freeway, which continues north until it passes downtown Beaverton. Walnut Street travels across the neighborhood, and it merges with the Pacific Highway to the east. Portland’s TriMet 45 bus line stops along 121st Avenue in the neighborhood, running northeast to the city center.
