The city formerly known as Peg Town
Originally called Peg Town for its hometown industry that in the 1860s produced shoe pegs -- a key component in 19th century footwear -- Maple City in the early 1900s got a new name and a new focus, instead paying homage to logging, loggers and their families. Today, Maple City is a sleepy neighborhood northwest of Traverse City with under 300 full-time residents, many of whom have lived here for generations. Richard Freundl, a Realtor in Traverse City with Bayshore Group Realty, says Maple City is more village than town. “People put down roots—literally, as farming is the main industry—and stick around.”

Restaurants, shops and farmstands
The village center is at West Burdickville and Maple City, where two restaurants, a gas station/convenience store and a few shops do business. Broomstack Kitchen & Taphouse serves burgers and tacos and offers an extensive beer list, all within Maple City’s historic schoolhouse. Inside Broomstack, diners catch front-row views of the Leelanau Curling Club’s adjoining indoor ice rink. Alongside the Curling Club and Broomstack is Sleeping Bear Bay Club, a gym that offers yoga and group fitness classes. On Maple City Road, Pegtown Station serves pizza in the evenings and brunch from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily. Next door, MC Short Stop, a convenience store attached to the Mobil gas station, provides quick access to household necessities, snacks and fuel.
Nearby farms, including Bohemian Lavender Farm and Red Gate Farm, offer farm-fresh produce and pickled and canned preserves, and something that doesn't come in a jar or can. “When you drive along Shimek Road, you see the beautiful purple fields; people roll down their windows to smell lavender on the breeze,” says Freundl. Pop-up farmstands, where people stop by to pick up herbs and goods, are common in Maple City. For pantry restocks, head 3 miles east along East Bellinger Road to reach Bunting’s Cedar Market, the nearest full-service grocery store.
