Eight miles east of downtown Tucson, Casa De Carlos offers scenic views near the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, with Southwestern-style homes just steps from Pima County’s longest trail.
Casa De Carlos residents can easily walk or ride their bikes to Pantano River Park Trail, a section of the 130-plus-mile Chuck Huckelberry Loop that wraps around Pima County. With paved pathways and bike lanes, the dog-friendly loop is a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts, attracting walkers, cyclists and even horseback riders. The neighborhood is also home to Fort Lowell Park, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The park’s Fort Lowell Museum takes visitors inside a former military post from the late 1800s with exhibits about military life during the Apache Wars. Ruins of old adobe structures are found around the park as well, along with fun recreational activities. The park features ball fields used by local leagues, tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool.
Casa De Carlos is separated into two sections of homes. The west side features several three-to-four-bedroom midcentury modern houses from the 1950s. Most are fixed on quarter-acre xeriscape lots with backyards bordered by private brick walls. Some backyards have in-ground pools, while others come with cozy patios. There’s also a section of two-story Mediterranean-style houses with signature red-tiled roofs and stucco siding. These homes were built in the early 2000s and come with attached garages in the back, while the front of each house faces other fronts with a shared sidewalk in between. Both styles of homes range from $350,000 to $500,000. On the east side of Case De Carlos are mostly single-story townhouses with carports. They are part of homeowners associations and sell for around $200,000 to $275,000.
All of the neighborhood’s stores and restaurants are located along East Grant Road. Locals can grab their essentials at either Costco Wholesale, Target or Albertsons. While there are lots of different types of restaurants nearby, Casa De Carlos is known for its many Mexican restaurants. Paco’s is a popular spot to grab a quick breakfast burrito through the drive-thru. Right next to Paco’s, Amelia’s offers an extensive menu of Mexican favorites, including its famous quesabirrias. And the specialty is all in the name at The Quesadillas, which is right next to Amelia’s.
Students attend W.V. Whitmore Elementary, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche. They’ll go on to B-rated Dodge Middle School and Catalina High School. Catalina, graded a C, is known for its three magnet programs, including aviation, allied health and construction, allowing students to earn professional licenses and certificates.
There are no major highways in Casa De Carlos, so locals drive or take the Sun Tran bus on the main roads to get around the neighborhood and surrounding Tucson area. It’s about an 8-mile drive to Downtown Tucson, where residents can access Interstates 10 and 19 to head out of the city.
