Condos and single-family homes in Central Tucson
Set along residential streets laid out in a grid, Dodge Flowers’ homes were built during the mid- to late 20th century and are generally ranch-style with red brick or stucco facades. Most homes here are part of the local homeowners association, whose monthly dues of about $200 go toward community upkeep. “It’s an older side of town, so the majority were built during the 50s and 70s,” Shumway says. These two- to four-bedroom homes have layouts of 800 to 1,800 square feet and often include attached carports and patios or porches; their gravel-packed lots range from 4,000 to 9,000 square feet, often dotted with low-water plantings like prickly pear cacti, agave and the occasional palm tree. Prices typically range from $250,000 to $400,000, depending on a home’s size and renovations. Most residents here are renters, and both Shumway and Petersen say it’s a popular area for property investors renting to University of Arizona students. There are also a handful of apartment buildings and condos in the area. Pueblo-inspired condos with adobe-style facades in the gated Flower Condominiums were built during the early 2000s. These two- to three-bedroom condos typically have 800- to 1,500-square-foot layouts and include assigned parking; residents here pay monthly HOA dues of about $350, which go toward maintenance. Prices range from about $150,000 to $250,000, depending on a condo’s size.
Tucson Botanical Gardens and parks nearby
Less than a mile away, the Tucson Botanical Gardens have been a community mainstay for over 50 years, offering educational activities for kids, art exhibits and hundreds of varieties of native and exotic flowers and succulents, including desert marigolds and pincushion cacti. About 5 miles away, the 130-acre Reid Park is a hub for all things sports and recreation. Petersen says you’ll see locals at the park “jogging, biking, walking their dog, hitting the driving range; the zoo’s in the park as well.” The park’s 2-mile, paved loop trail is popular for a morning run, while the Reid Park Zoo is a go-to locale for a family outing; golfers may hit the links at either of the park’s two 18-hole golf courses. For striking desert views and dirt-packed hiking, Shumway recommends the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, 11 miles away.Tucson public schools with unique opportunities
Dodge Flower is part of the Tucson Unified School District, rated B overall by Niche. At the C-plus-rated John B. Wright Elementary, students help maintain the school garden, where they grow flowers, fruits and veggies. Kids then move on to the B-minus-rated Doolen Middle and the C-plus-rated Catalina High. At the latter, teens may take dual-enrollment courses for college credit at Pima County Community College.Local events and U of A gamedays
Events are often held at the Tucson Botanical Gardens, everything from cooking and gardening classes to seasonal celebrations with live music and holiday decorations, like November’s Día de Los Muertos Celebración. The striking LightsUp! A Festival of Illumination in November is a highlight, where the gardens are lit up with thousands of string lights and locals enjoy hot chocolate while getting into the holiday spirit. Less than a mile away, Photographic Works hosts art galleries and workshops throughout the year in subjects like bookmaking and hand-coloring photographs. On game days, sports fans and students may head 4 miles away to Arizona Stadium to see the University of Arizona Wildcats play football. “You’ll see students dressed up in school colors, and the whole university is tailgating all day,” Petersen says.Interstate 10 access and Sun Tran buses
Downtown Tucson and Interstate 10 are about 6 miles away, the latter leading 116 miles to Phoenix. Shumway says Grant Road is the main thoroughfare here, which runs east to west through Tucson and is dotted with shopping and dining. The University of Arizona is about 4 miles away, and while the neighborhood is walkable and bike-friendly, Petersen says locals typically drive or use Sun Tran buses to get to the university. Tucson Medical Center is 2 miles away, and Tucson International Airport is 11 miles away.Shopping and dining along Grant Road
Dodge Flower is mostly residential, but there are several small businesses, restaurants and car dealerships just outside of the neighborhood. At Northgate, a retail plaza, residents may grocery shop at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, browse retail chains and grab fast-food from spots like Little Caesar’s and Filiberto’s. “Tucson’s a big foodie city, and there are some new up-and-coming restaurants in that area,” Petersen says. Along Grant Road, Noodleholics is a casual Chinese eatery serving up steaming hot noodle bowls and comfort favorites like pan-fried dumplings and iced matcha. Mint Bar’s just down the street, a longstanding Tucson dive that’s been serving libations since 1934 in a no-frills, laidback setting with occasional events, like karaoke nights and stand-up comedy. Also along Grant Road, ADA Imports Market offers African goods and groceries, and The Shelter Cocktail Lounge is a retro bar with 60s-inspired decorations and memorabilia.
