Three routes for traveling around Tulsa

As the famed US Route 66 heads east of Tulsa’s downtown districts, it crosses the Mingo Valley Expressway before ducking under Interstate 44. The residential neighborhood of Oakbrook Village occupies the wedge of land between this trio of highways. Named for the condo development that makes up the bulk of its housing, the neighborhood is less than five miles south of Tulsa International Airport and 10 miles east of downtown Tulsa. “It’s a good area as far as the commute, getting on the highway,” says Sharie Moore, Realtor with Keller Williams Premier. With the flexibility and sense of community that accompanies condo-style living, it's a convenient package.

Owner-occupied pet-friendly condos

The eponymous condo development occupies roughly half the neighborhood, with brick-and-chestnut buildings clustered on curved roads and cul-de-sacs. Most Oakbrook Village condos feature fireplaces and two-car garages, which boosts their popularity. The units are entirely owner-occupied, and the HOA welcomes four-legged friends. “It’s mostly retired people, lots of little dogs,” says Curtis Kretchmar, Realtor with Chinowth & Cohen and former HOA president for Oakbrook Village. A two-bedroom, one-bath condo with an attached two-car garage sells for about $110,000, while a three-bedroom, two-bath unit with similar features costs about $135,000. The neighborhood is compact enough to be walkable, but the condo development area lacks sidewalks. A mobile home park fans out from a central square in the western half. There are also several apartment complexes in the southwest corner, setting the neighborhood’s ratio of owners to renters at 50-50.

Nosh at Northeast Plaza

The Northeast Plaza Shopping Center is tucked into the corner of the neighborhood near the junction of Route 66 and I-44. Residents can easily walk to the complex, home to a Walgreens pharmacy, a Subway shop, a liquor store and Las Americas grocery. The sun-yellow Tacos el Chilango food truck brightens the corner of the lot, dishing up gorditas, flautas and quesabirrias every day of the week except Sunday. Those who prefer to enjoy their tacos at a sit-down establishment can cross the street to Molcajetes. A short drive down South Garnett Road leads to Price Mart, another option for groceries and household essentials.

Charting a course at Lewis & Clark

Oakbrook Village students only need to travel a short distance north to reach Lewis & Clark Elementary School, where a collaborative approach allows the faculty to monitor student progress and involve families in the learning experience. East Central Middle and High Schools are also nearby. Each school receives a Niche grade of C-minus.

Ties to greater Tulsa

MetroLink Tulsa buses stop in several spots on South Garnett Road and Route 66, so folks without cars have an easy time getting downtown. The trip takes about 15 minutes by car. Driving to Tulsa International Airport takes even less time, about 5 minutes, depending on traffic. With three major arteries forming a triangle around the residential neighborhood, getting around the Tulsa metropolitan area is a breeze.

Trek the Mingo Trail

Residents of the Oakbrook Village condominium complex enjoy access to an onsite clubhouse and swimming pool. A short distance west, the paved multiuse Mingo Trail runs alongside the creek that shares its name, but since it’s not within walking distance, driving to one of the access points is a must. The closest park is Cowan Park in Columbus. Adjacent to Peary Elementary School, the park features tennis courts, colorful play structures and picnic tables.

Crime

Oakbrook Village has a CAP Index score of 7, higher than the national average of 4. Local news reports point to housing insecurity and substance abuse as ongoing issues contributing to the area’s high crime rate. The Tulsa Police Department partnered with Oklahoma’s Mental Health Association to directly address the needs of residents experiencing housing insecurity or mental health crises. And while the condos at Oakbrook Village aren’t gated, the development offers security services.
