Canyon views in Uintah
With a population of less than 2,000, Uintah feels more like a big family and less like a small city. “Uintah is a generational city,” says Council Member Kristi Bell. “There’s a lot of families with people who’ve lived here their entire lives. The kids move away when they get older, but many end up missing Uintah and moving back.” Located five miles south of Ogden and 25 miles north of Salt Lake City, Uintah snags one of the best seats in northern Utah: at the mouth of Weber Canyon. “Uintah feels like the country, but there are cities all around you,” says Bell. “It’s the best of both worlds. Uintah is a little secluded; we’re out of the way, and no one knows we’re here unless you come looking for us.”

Local happenings
Yearly service projects and bi-monthly senior services reflect Uintah’s small city charm and commitment to the community. City leaders select projects from a list of ideas submitted by citizens and departments each year to improve Uintah and help citizens gain community service experience. Local senior citizens are invited to indulge in self-care during Happy Feet every other month. For the low cost of $10, Uintah seniors can enjoy relaxing foot baths, massages and pedicures. Uintah’s community spirit comes out strong at the annual U-Day, and 2023 marked the celebration’s 100th anniversary. The day starts with a 7 am wake-up call from the Weber Fire District and runs non-stop until the Glow Stick Dance Party concludes at 10 pm. Of course, classic events like the community breakfast and parade are a given. However, U-Day is widely known for several unique events like the Bubble Gum Blowing Contest, Backwards Driving Race and pop-up Uintah Museum.

Getting around
Direct access to Highway 89 and Interstate 84 makes for easy commutes to jobs, entertainment and mountainous adventures. There isn’t any public transportation readily available by way of bus stops in Uintah, though there are train stations a few minutes north and south of the town.

Uintah housing
Homes generally range from $400,000 to $730,000, though there are a few outliers on either side. No matter which part of Uintah a resident lives in or what kind of house they own, they can count on peaceful streets. East 6600 is the city’s main road; if someone doesn’t live along it, their subdivision branches off of it. These one-way streets guarantee slow residential drivers are the only people coming in and out, giving kids a safe place to play.
Ranch-style homes, large Craftsman-style homes and newly constructed single-family homes with attached garages make up most of the housing options and often come with acreage. These well-maintained homes were built throughout the 1900s and represent Uintah’s evolution between its 1850s settlement and 2000 city incorporation. Inside, there are up to four bedrooms and bathrooms. Long and wide cement driveways lead to two-car garages and RV pads; many homes expand storage space with detached garages and sheds. Some homeowners enjoy manicured lawns with assorted bushes and mulched gardens, but grand green trees stand firm in every yard and add to Uintah’s rural mountainside vibe.
On the city’s west side, manufactured homes in the Cottonwood Estates appeal to buyers with budgets capped at $145,000. These single-level homes are known for modern features like granite kitchen islands and front porches big enough to fit outdoor furniture. Moving east toward the canyon, there are large custom builds from the 1900s and early 2000s that cost at least $750,000 and appeal to families who enjoy nature and privacy.

Education in Uintah
Students attend Uintah Elementary, South Ogden Junior High and Bonneville High Schools. Uintah Elementary and South Ogden Junior High are in nearby South Ogden, and Bonneville High is further north in Washington Terrace. While the schools are spread out, parents who opt to drive their children can conveniently access each off Highway 89. Great Schools gives Uintah Elementary an overall 5/10 rating, while Niche gave it a B for teachers. South Ogden Junior High got a B-minus for teachers and an overall C grade, but the school offers various theater, music and sports programs. Niche gave Bonneville an overall B grade and ranks it in the top 44 percent of Utah high schools for athletes. In 2023, the Lakers’ girls’ softball team competed in the state championship series.

An athlete's oasis
City Park offers immediate outdoor fun for kids and families. A baseball diamond, basketball court and tennis court give local athletes variety, and covered picnic tables provide a shady spot to chow down on packed lunches or host get-togethers. There are also several indoor gyms in the area. Locals can hit the basketball courts at Complete Shooter, practice stunts at Pitcher’s Tumbling and Cheer and join a pickleball league at The Picklr. During winter, residents can hop on I-84 and head into the Weber Canyon—Uintah is only 16 miles from the famous Snow Basin Ski Resort.

Family-owned eateries and familiar chains
There are a few fast food options to soothe immediate cravings, though several local options sit alongside grocery stores like Fresh Market, two miles north in South Ogden. Stop inside family-owned Chinese restaurant Wing Wah and savor tangy, authentic meals from classics like beef and broccoli to eclectic items like honey plum pork. This mom-and-pop shop has become a family legacy, with the now-retired owners’ children running daily operations, more than 40 years after immigrating to the U.S. After dinner, pop over to Twisted Sugar for fresh-baked cookies, smoothies and specialty sodas. Continue up Highway 89 to leisurely shop at Newgate Mall or hop on I-84 and head to Riverdale, where big box retailers will provide everything needed for household essentials.
