Military families often choose to live in Melwood
Melwood sits on the eastern edge of Joint Base Andrews, one of Prince George’s County’s largest employers. Winding roads, cul-de-sacs and parks make up most of the community, and this suburban setting is why military families and base employees often choose to live here. “There’s a much better work-life balance in Melwood than on the base,” says Wyevetra Jordan, the owner-broker of The Home Team Realty Group who has sold several houses in the area. “You don’t wake up right where you work, but you’re still just minutes away from all the on-base amenities.” With proximity to Interstate 495, locally called the Capital Beltway, and easy access to public transportation options, Melwood is also convenient to the rest of the Washington, D.C., area. “Military or not, people like living here for the great location,” Jordan says.

Housing here includes bi-levels, ranch styles and New Traditionals built between the 1960s and early 2000s. Marwood, a 55+ subdivision on the community’s northern end, has apartments and detached homes. Oak and sycamore trees often shade grass lawns, with the median lot size at about a quarter acre. Houses typically have two to six bedrooms and driveways leading to garages. Smaller, older homes tend to cost between $360,000 and $500,000, while larger, newer houses usually range from $550,000 to $740,000. The community also has townhouses, with prices starting at $350,000 and reaching $560,000.

Planes fly overhead from Joint Base Andrews
President Franklin D. Roosevelt first established the site of Joint Base Andrews in 1942 to keep up with the country’s aviation needs during World War II. Today, Air Force One, the Air National Guard and other vital units are stationed at the base, which employs over 20,000 people. Fighter jets, cargo planes and helicopters depart from the 4,320-acre facility daily, and Melwood does fall under flight paths. “Aircraft noise is inevitable,” Jordan says. “But a lot of people think it’s really fun to run outside and catch a glimpse of the planes flying over.” Every other September, the Joint Base Andrews Air Show features demo flights, parachute jumps and performances by the Air Force Band.
Traffic may back up near the base and on the way to D.C.
Though some streets have sidewalks, Melwood is a car-dependent community. Pearl Harbor Gate off Dower House Road is the closest entrance onto the base. It may experience heavy traffic during rush hour. “The line to get through it sometimes extends out to the street,” Jordan says. “But it’s nowhere near as bad as the traffic to get into the city.” A 17-mile drive west on Suitland Parkway brings commuters to D.C. and the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. “It can take anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour to get there,” Jordan says. The Capital Beltway, which loops around the whole city, is about 4 miles west. TheBus offers public transportation throughout the county and to the Addison Road–Seat Pleasant Metro station, one of several Blue and Silver Line stops within 10 miles. There’s a medical center on base, and the MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is about 5 miles south.
Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High offers support to military families
Prince George’s County Public Schools serve the community. Kids can attend Melwood Elementary, James Madison Middle and Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High, which all earn C grades from Niche. The high school has a Military and Family Life Counseling program to support students of active-duty military families. Prince George’s Community College offers over 50 courses on base, ranging from computer security to criminal justice.

Several recreation facilities are on base, including campgrounds, fitness centers and two 18-hole golf courses. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders can explore 16 miles of trailway stretching under deciduous forests at Rosaryville State Park, about 5 miles south.

Meadow’s is a counter-service spot serving pizza, subs and pasta, while fried chicken and barbecued meats are on the menu at The Rolling Rib. Construction warehouses and office buildings fill the industrial pocket on the community’s west side. Joint Base Andrews has a shopping center with a commissary, The Exchange and fast-food restaurants. Grocery stores like Aldi, Walmart and Food Lion are all within 5 miles. Those not affiliated with the military need a visitor pass in order to access the base; badges are issued through the Base Visitor Center.
