A Craven County farming community off the highway
Ernul, a quiet farming community, has an out-of-the-way feel in rural Craven County. Some residential properties have fruit trees, horse stables and barns. A railroad and the main highway stretch through the community; the road connects locals to nearby towns and cities in the county. "It's a nice, small town. We are right off [Highway] 17. So, when you get off, there is this random little strawberry farm. But further down, you'll find New Bern," says Logan Cox, a resident and employee at White's Farm.
Locals can visit West Craven Park, see local wildlife and enjoy the Neuse River
At West Craven Park, young athletes play football and baseball on the sporting fields. The grounds also have several tennis courts and a play area. Hunting is popular in this region of North Carolina, and locals often see bears, duck, deer and turkey on large tracts of private and public lands. Spring Garden Boat Ramp and Cow Pen Landing are the closest public boat launches to access the Neuse River.
Country homes and flooding risks in Ernul
In Ernul, residents live on lots spanning from half an acre to over 10 acres. Many homes run on septic tanks, so buyers looking to build will require a septic tank permit from the county. The Ernul's housing market includes land parcels and simple ranch styles. There are also older, 20th-century two-story houses throughout the community. The Forest Oaks and Country Living subdivisions contain 21st-century houses. New Traditional homes and modern farmhouses are constructed on empty plots of land. Home prices typically range from $85,000 to $385,000.
Most flooding in the county is caused by storm surges and riverine flooding. Locals should check if their home is in a FEMA flood zone. The region also has a history of tropical storms and hurricanes.
Attending Bridgeton Elementary and West Craven schools
Parents can request school reassignments on the Craven County Schools website; approved families must provide transportation to the out-of-zone school. Students are zoned for Bridgeton Elementary and West Craven Middle; both have C-plus grades on Niche. West Craven High receives a B-minus; the high school offers JROTC as well as career and technical education pathways in health science, agriculture education and public safety.
Visiting New Bern and Vanceboro for events
Ernul locals attend community gatherings in nearby towns. "White's Farm donates strawberries to the Strawberry Festival in Vanceboro, but we also have our own little festival here where vendors come out and sell their products," Cox says. Bridgeton hosts a BlueberryFest in June at Vernon Blades Park. New Bern has an outdoor concert series, the Footloose on the Neuse as well as the North Carolina Film Festival.
Exposed brick on Ernul Brick Road
Ernul Brick Road intersects with Highway 17. Constructed in the early 1900s, the roadway has one of the state's longest stretches of brick paving. Although the nine-foot-wide highway has a thin layer of asphalt over it, some of the original brick is still visible. "To get to New Bern, you take a left on [Highway] 17, and in about 15 minutes, you'll get to New Bern's downtown," Cox says. Locals can find Carolina East Medical Center and Coastal Carolina Regional Airport in New Bern. "About 6 miles up the road is the town of Vanceboro. Past the town, you'll get to Greenville in about 45 minutes," Cox says.
Off the highway awaits White's Farm and shopping in Vanceboro
Along Highway 17 are Dollar General and a few convenience stores, such as A&E Stop N Shop. The neighborhood thrift store, Askins Pickin' & Grinnin', is also on the highway. White's Farm sells fresh produce and ice cream seasonally. "We're big on strawberries, but we have it all. Watermelons, squash, zucchini, peppers, corn and tomatoes," Cox says. There's a Food Lion in Vanceboro; more supermarket options and a Walmart Supercenter are in New Bern. "I like to go out to downtown New Bern, walk on the water a little bit, and visit a really nice restaurant," Cox says. Locals may also visit Vanceboro for more eateries closer to home, like Vera's Diner.
