Fruit Valley is an unlikely aquatic retreat set on the outskirts of Vancouver. With Interstate 5 just a mile and a half east and greenery everywhere, Fruit Valley is one of those areas overlooked because of its tiny residential footprint.
Most of the homes in Fruit Valley are on the southern side of the neighborhood, at the tip of its inverted triangle shape. “It’s a great little area,” says Realtor Jessica Kipp of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, with 5 closed sales. “People are mostly looking for older homes.” The older builds from the 1940s to the 1980s rest along a few in-line streets with small lots and driveways. The homes themselves are generally just shy of or just over 1,000 square feet. Most are in the bungalow style, with a modest vinyl façade and a door overhang. These fetch about $330,000 to $400,000.
Kids in Fruit Valley attend school right in their backyard at Fruit Valley Elementary, rated C by Niche. It’s also among the smallest schools in the city. A mile and a half down 40th street is Discovery Middle School, which Niche ranks a C overall. The Hudson Bay Foundation, a local nonprofit, supports Hudson Bay High with a booster program.
Fruit Valley Park may be small, but its playground is great for kids to burn off steam after school. The Community Center is perfect for hosting small group parties. A handful of large trees provides shade next to the park’s open field. If you prefer to spend your weekends on the water, Fruit Valley has you covered…on both sides. To the north is Vancouver Lake. “It’s non-motorized, so they have small sailboat clubs,” says Kipp. Vancouver Lake Sailing Club offers sailing classes so you can learn to sail in a controlled environment because there’s no natural or boat motor current. For a memorable experience, hike the Frenchmans Bar Trail along the lake’s edge, then hop in for a swim, or vice versa. On the neighborhood's southern end runs the Columbia River, where Washington borders Oregon. Head down to the pier and stop to watch the boats passing through.
You can even have a sit-down meal on the pier at Twigs Bistro. Locals can enjoy a cocktail while admiring the waterfront view daily if they want to because Twigs’ happy hour is Monday through Sunday. Farther inland towards central Vancouver, check out the Sedgwick, a restaurant serving salads, bites and plates like cornmeal-crusted trout and short rib birria tacos. Their atmosphere is upscale-meets-casual, with a set of couches contrasting candlelit tables.
Getting food for the week means going farther into the city, ideally by car. You can take the C-TRAN 6 line, but it’s less efficient. The Vancouver Farmers Market features over 100 individual vendor stalls, offering a ton of variety ranging from essential foodstuffs to curiosities you’d never think to see. Just up the road toward Lake Shore is a Safeway with all your grocery basics.
When you take a trip to Fruit Valley, make the most of it and visit the lake or the river. If you can’t decide between the two, see both!
