Small town living just outside of downtown Bangor
Stretching just over 3 square miles, Veazie offers a relaxed suburban environment in Central Maine that’s less than 4 miles from the heart of Bangor. It used to be part of the city back in the 1800s, but Gen. Sam Veazie rallied locals to secede in 1853 due to high property taxes, and the community that resulted was named for him. Yet even after the separation, the community did not lose its connection to Bangor, and the area's major roads and interstates have kept those ties strong. Today, Veazie is full of single-family homes and duplexes that range from historic builds to new properties with views of well-preserved forests or the Penobscot River. “There is more of a country-style living here compared to the city,” says Julie Strout, the deputy clerk of Veazie, who has worked in the area for over 12 years. “The area is more community-focused, with a lot of new development going on all the time.” Many of these newer developments are along Chase Road in town and offer a more forested view compared to the rest of town.
The town of Veazie was established in 1853.

Homes in Veazie display several common architectural styles, with Cape Cods, New Englanders, ranch-style houses and Colonial Revival-inspired homes making up the majority of the town's residences. Many were constructed in the mid- to late 1900s, with some newer developments and duplexes appearing as recently as 2021. Strout says that a lot of the homes up to date in terms of amenities, and it's all really pretty out there,” Strout says. Homes commonly range between $200,000 and $400,000.

Gluten-free baked goods and a restaurant incubator
Despite its small size, Veazie is home to several popular bakeries and restaurants. One such eatery, Raegamuffin's Gluten-Free Bakery, offers everything from coffee to whoopie pies and macaroon cookies. “They have been doing very well, and since it’s the only place around that has homemade gluten-free items, people travel from all over to get it,” Strout says. What started as a popular local spot called Korean Dad has become well-known as a restaurant incubator where eateries can serve the community without having to buy their own space. Each day, the restaurant switches between six different owners and six different cuisines, with a bakery, Caribbean cooking, a pizzeria, Filipino options, Colombian food and Korean dishes in the rotation. About 4 miles away, the Bangor Mall area is home to several big-box stores and supermarkets next to the mall, including Walmart, BJ’s Wholesale Club and Hannaford.

Sports fields and Penobscot river access
The primary source of recreation in town is a park with no name located behind the Veazie Community School. It’s home to two baseball diamonds, tennis courts and plenty of green space. Riverside Park sits where a historic dam used to be, and it’s now home to a boat launch, as well as a number of picnic tables and benches. The community also has Riverview Park, which is a smaller park that offers more access to the Penobscot River for fishing and canoeing. The park is home to the Veazie Salmon Club, a private club where members can join together for a variety of outdoor activities, from fishing to canoeing and hunting. For additional hiking options, the Buck Hill Conservation Area is on the northern end of town and provides 2 miles of wooded trails that is maintained by the Orono Land Trust. The Penobscot Valley Country Club is 2 miles from the heart of town and is an 18-hole championship golf course that was built in 1924 and has been used by famous golfers like Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson.

I-95 to Old Town and Bangor
U.S. Route 2 runs through the town's core, and Interstate 95 can be found at the northern end of the community, allowing for access to Old Town 7 miles to the north and Bangor 4 miles to the south. Residents can often be seen walking along the side of residential streets, but this is more for recreation than reaching a specific destination. On average, Strout says a car will be needed for shopping or commuting. The Bangor International Airport is 8 miles to the west, and the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is 3 miles away, which Strout says is a huge benefit to the community.
