Mixing suburban and peaceful rural living
The neighborhood of Shetland once included Huntertown, a small village established in 1817 by U.S. Colored Troops veteran Jerry Gatewood, as a community for African Americans following the Civil War. A neighborhood park pays homage to the former village and also serves as a convenient spot for relaxing or holding a picnic. Located along the outskirts of Versailles, today Shetland is a peaceful rural community with proximity to amenities like the largest Kroger in the state of Kentucky. The neighborhood is also home to the highly rated Huntertown Elementary School and features extensive walking paths that provide residents with scenic farmland views. Nearby, Versailles' historic downtown is also under 2 miles away. “We love it. It’s a great place to raise kids, and it has a very friendly community. A lot of the houses here have decent lot sizes, where you’re not right on top of your neighbor,” says Lauren Jacobs, a 26-year resident of the community and owner of the Cheerful Baker.

Late 20th-century ranch-style houses and contemporary Traditionals
Shetland has mature oaks and maple trees that blanket lawns and sidewalks with their colorful leaves during the fall. And although the neighborhood has its share of new housing options, the developers have left the trees intact. “I love the outdoors, the trees, the beautiful rolling hills. When there’s new construction, that’s usually wiped out,” Jacobs says about the scenery she continues to enjoy here. Shetland is primarily comprised of single-family homes featuring ranch-styles, contemporary Traditionals and Colonial Revivals built between the mid-1990s and today. A few modern houses also feature English Tudor and Queen Anne architectural influences, but these are the outliers. Single-family homes under 2,000 square feet can cost between $130,000 and $250,000, while many larger more contemporary builds run between $400,000 and $700,000.

Huntertown Elementary and Southside Elementary schools are within this community, and both get A-minus grades from ratings site Niche. Jacobs praises Huntertown Elementary, in particular, saying "The neighborhood has what I think is the best elementary school right there, and you can walk to it from my house.” In addition to its strong grade, Niche ranks Huntertown as the best public elementary school in Woodford County. Students here may then go on to Woodford County Middle and High schools, which, respectively, receive A and B-plus grades from Niche. The ratings site also ranks the middle school among the 15 best public middle schools in the state. At the high school level, the Woodford County boys’ club lacrosse team not only went undefeated but also won its first-ever state championship in the spring of 2024.

Relaxing views at Huntertown park and sports at Falling Springs Center
In addition to the beautiful views and walkability, dog owners enjoy bringing their pets out to the Huntertown Community Interpretive Park. While at the park, visitors may spot the iron placard which details the history of the Huntertown community. A few miles east, is the Falling Springs Center, a 72,000-square-foot recreational facility that also includes a performing arts center. Basketball players will find a few courts for pickup games, while an elevated track gives joggers a place to run during inclement weather. Swimmers can also get some practice in at the center’s 8-lane pool. The facility also neighbors the Graviss McDonald’s Disc Golf Course.

Within minutes of Versailles and Woodford County festivals
Shetland is minutes from Versailles’ many annual celebrations, like the Versailles Twilight Festival. Held in early September, hundreds flock to this city’s downtown to browse artist booths, jump in the bounce house, ride the mechanical bull or participate in the hay bale tossing contest. Shetland is also a few miles from the Jack Kain Ford dealership, the site of the area’s annual Fall Festival held in late October. This relatively new event showcases vintage cars, food trucks and live music. For the Fourth of July, the Falling Springs Center hosts the Versailles and Woodford County Independence Day celebrations, and the center also neighbors the site of the Woodford County Fair, a nearly seven-decade-old festivity that occurs over several days every May and June. Fair events include everything from beauty pageants to livestock shows.
