From trading hub to residential neighborhood
South Warren is a quiet coastal neighborhood in Bristol County, Rhode Island. In the early 1800s, the town was a major hub for maritime trade, transporting spice and tea before becoming a whaling hub. Today, Warren's primary industry is no longer centered around the water, but residents still experience its coastal origins through its marinas, beaches and seafood restaurants. South Warren is bordered by two bodies of water: Narraganset Bay and Warren River. "This neighborhood is more inland, but if you move towards the east or west, you'll easily find a bunch of cute little houses overlooking the water," says Allison Dessel, a Realtor and Rhode Island native. Christy Querceto, a Realtor born and raised in Barrington, adds, "Warren, in general, is a great area. It feels small-town and historic, but you also get to be by the beach, trails and all the great food in Downtown." Querceto says Warren is also centrally located, allowing residents to commute into the nearby cities of Bristol and Providence.
The Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is adjacent to South Warren and is a beautiful asset.
Exploring nature at the Audubon Nature Center
Over 28 acres of greenery await at the Audubon Nature Center: trails, meadows, marshes, even an aquarium. The osprey are known to gather at the end of the boardwalk. The center is also connected to the Easy Bay Bike Path, a 15-mile trail that runs through East Providence, Warren and Bristol. Another highlight is Warren Town Beach. Although the it's on the smaller side, beachgoers enjoy its seclusion and the sight of boats sailing in and out of the harbor, people paddleboarding and children scouring the sand for seashells.
Spacious yards are a good buffer from the river in the South Warren - Metacom neighborhood.
Homes with New England architecture
"South Warren has a mix of housing," says Querceto. "But some common styles you're going to see are ranches, Cape Cods and colonials." Most sit on green lawns shaded by maple trees and come with a driveway and garage space. Querceto adds: "This area has a lot of single-family, single-story homes, but you'll also see some larger houses too, like a classic colonial." Princes start at $350,000 and go up to $680,000 for properties by the water. The neighborhood's west side opens up to Main Street, which leads into Downtown. There are no sidewalks, but walkers and bicycles are common on side streets.
The Mount Hope High School in Bristol serves the Bristol-Warren School District.
A combined school district
Kids in Warren and Bristol share a school district. Hugh Cole Elementary enrolls over 500 students in grades prekindergarten through fifth, with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. The school is considered a Feinstein Learning School, part of a Rhode Island initiative to encourage community service. Niche rates the school a B overall. Kickemuit Middle has nearly 700 students enrolled in grades six through eight and maintains a similar student-teacher ratio to Hugh Cole. It also receives a B. Over 900 students in Grades nine through 12 attend Mount Hope High School. Its marching band participates in the county's Fourth of July Parade every year. The high school receives a B-minus overall.
Shops along Main Street are an easy walk from South Warren.
Shopping and Dining
According to Querceto, Downtown Warren has some of the area's best shopping and dining options. "When I was a kid, people used to go into Newport for a nice dinner, but over the years, there's been an amazing up-and-coming foodie scene. Now you have people driving into Warren for date night or a special celebration with their families." To catch up with friends, residents meet up at The Guild. The bar is known for its small bites and craft beers. For some fine dining by the water, Querceto recommends The Wharf. "I love that place; it's such a classic," she says, citing the cocktail menu and stuffed lobster. "It's going to remain as a favorite for many people, even with all the new places opening up." For groceries, Shaw's Supermarket or Tom's Market are nearby.
Quahogs are a staple in South Warren, and the fishermen are a friendly and salty crew.
Warren Quahog Arts Festival keeps it local
One of the most popular events is the Warren Quahog Arts Festival, which takes place every September. The festival is held in Burrs Hill Park, with live-music performances and works on sale from local artists. Food trucks also serve fresh seafood, such as lobster rolls.
The East Bay Bike Path passes through South Warren and is a pleasant way to enjoy the day.
