Lakewood
Old-world colonial charm
Most homes in Lakewood are small – bungalows or ranch-style properties – with modest yards on streets without sidewalks. There are also two-story homes with colonial influences in the neighborhood. Most properties fall in the $300,000 to $400,000 range and were built between 1940 and 1970. “The neighborhood has a lot of charm,” says McNally, who grew up near Lakewood. “There’s a mix of older and newer homes with parks and schools close by.”Date night in Pawtuxet Village
About 2 miles east of the neighborhood is Pawtuxet Village, nestled at the confluence of the Pawtuxet River and Narragansett Bay. Brick sidewalks wind through the village, leading to quaint shops, locally owned businesses and inviting cafes. The waterfront offers residents a place to stroll along the river.Step into Elizabeth Portofino Tuscan Grille’s soft lighting and dine on Italian cuisine. The restaurant has been part of the community for 25 years. For dessert, head to Lakewood Ice Cream, a small white building with a gabled roof. Patrons can walk up to the window to order their treat and then eat it on one of the picnic tables outside. To cook at home, head to Shaw’s grocery store on Warwick Avenue and grab ingredients for dinner. Just up the street, there’s also a Stop & Shop. On the neighborhood’s southern boundary, along Post Road, there’s a Walmart. Surrounding the neighborhood in all directions, you can find various quick amenities, like Dunkin’ or McDonald’s.
Revolutionary revelry on the Parkway
In the summer, the Pawtuxet Village hosts Gaspee Days, a series of events and festivals commemorating the burning of the British revenue schooner, HMS Gaspee, in 1772 – the first bloodshed of the American Revolution. The Gaspee Days Parade takes place on the second Saturday in June and locals gather along a two-mile stretch of Narragansett Parkway to watch fife and drums corps, fire trucks and decorated floats.Making a splash at local schools
Students are zoned for the Warwick Public School District and can attend Holiman Elementary School which Niche gives a C-plus rating and has a 17-to-1 student-teacher ratio, before moving to Warwick Veterans Junior High School, a C-plus rated school from Niche with a 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Then, they can finish their studies at Pilgrim High School, which Niche gives a B-minus and has an 11-to-1 student-teacher ratio.Weekend walks in the park
Along the Pawtuxet River, on the northern border of the neighborhood, is Belmont Park, which is walkable from some homes. There are two walking or biking trails here, one with a timber guard rail running alongside it that leads to residential streets and another through the woods, where the river is visible between trees in pocket vistas. Leashed dogs are allowed. There’s also a playground, where kids can run around and soccer and baseball fields where youth sporting events are occasionally held.Roger Williams Park and Zoo is about 4 miles north of the neighborhood. The park itself spans 400 acres and features scenic landscapes, botanical gardens and a lake. Visitors to the zoo can enjoy a diverse array of animal exhibits, as well as walking trails, historic architecture and recreational areas within the larger park.
The world beyond Warwick
“Warwick is like the central hub of Rhode Island,” says McNally. “You can get to anywhere in the state easily – or the world, with the airport being right there.” Along Jefferson Boulevard, buses lead to Newport, and along Elmwood Avenue, buses take locals 3 miles south to the Rhode Island TF Green International Airport. At the airport, there’s a commuter rail that leads into Providence. To get to Providence by car, travel Allens Avenue north for about 6 miles. U.S. Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 1 are just minutes from the neighborhood and will lead locals to other surrounding areas.
