Brookland is bursting with classic charm and contemporary relevance

Whether it’s the vibrant arts district or the distinguished religious institutions, Brookland is a treasure trove of history and culture. This area of Northeast Washington, D.C., has so many Catholic establishments that it’s nicknamed Little Rome. The community is also home to a colorful assortment of art studios clustered in the conveniently walkable Arts Plaza. Restaurants and other businesses line 12th Street, and classic houses sit on tree-shaded blocks nearby. These elements combine to create a neighborhood that feels like a town within a town.

Religious landmarks help shape Little Rome’s skyline and culture

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is among the defining features of the Little Rome area. The more than 206,000-square-foot landmark is the biggest Roman Catholic church in North America. Its Romanesque-Byzantine-style architecture includes a distinct dome covered in polychrome tiles and the 329-foot-tall Knights Tower. “The Basilica is humungous,” says local Realtor Eddie Suarez, who’s with TTR Sotheby's International Realty and has over a decade of real estate experience. “It sits very tall. It’s beautiful.” Inside, the church houses the largest assemblage of contemporary ecclesiastical art on the globe, plus a plethora of grand marble and tile details. The Basilica celebrates Mass daily, offers tours and hosted Pope Francis during his visit to D.C. in 2015.

The 173-acre Catholic University of America neighbors the Basilica, has over 5,000 total students and is the largest college campus in the city. You’ll also find the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land of America in Brookland, a Byzantine-style complex that acts as a U.S. home base for Franciscan friars. The monastery’s grounds include extensive gardens, with over 1,000 plants, including roses and vegetables. You can visit the gardens and the church daily, and the monastery holds an annual plant and herb sale in April. Other landmarks in the area include the Saint John Paul II National Shrine and the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, which dates to 1892.

A mix of established houses, townhomes and condos at varied prices

Single-family houses built between 1900 and 1960 form the foundation of Brookland’s housing stock. The selection includes a variety of colonial-style homes, American Foursquares and Craftsman-style bungalows on quiet, leafy streets. “It’s a very charming area, because it has very mature landscaping and trees,” Suarez says. “So that helps create a really nice ambiance for the neighborhood.” Single-family properties in need of work can sell for prices from the lower $300,000s to the lower $700,000s. Options in better condition range from the mid-$700,000s to over $1.7 million, including the area’s handful of recently built homes.

Brookland also has some connected townhouse-style properties, priced from the lower $300,000s to around $1 million. You'll find some condo units, too, usually priced from the lower $200,000s to the upper $500,000s. “The houses are not cookie-cutter, so that’s what people like about this area,” Suarez says.

Where residents can eat, shop and stroll in Brookland

The lengthy 12th Street is the epicenter of Brookland’s dining scene. The stretch harbors a variety of flavors from block to block. “It has a little bit of everything, and it’s very walkable,” Suarez says. Some of the options include:

  • Primrose, a French-inspired wine bar with dinner and brunch menus
  • Masala Story, an Indian restaurant known for its samosas
  • Menomale, which specializes in Neopolitan pizza
  • Murry & Paul's Restaurant, a cozy diner-style breakfast spot
  • The Harp, an Irish pub where you can fill up on fish-and-chips and Guinness
Other businesses on 12th include a Yes! Organic Market and a CVS in an Art Deco-style building that once housed Newton Theater, a former movie theater and concert venue that dates to 1937. The Rhode Island Place shopping center just south of Brookland has a Giant supermarket, Home Depot and Ross Dress for Less. The neighborhood’s Arts Walk is a particularly walkable stretch, closed to vehicular traffic and lined with places like Sio Ceramics, where you can take a pottery class, and Range of Emotion, where you can shop for handmade bags. There’s also a seasonal farmers market on the Arts Walk on Saturdays.

Playgrounds, courts and trails are easy to find

The gardens at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land of America aren’t the only place to get some fresh air in Brookland. The neighborhood includes multiple public green spaces, such as:

  • Noyes Park, which is located just off 12th street and includes a playground, outdoor fitness equipment and a pavilion
  • Dwight A. Mosley Sports Complex, where there are tennis and basketball courts and athletic fields
  • Fort Bunker Hill, which was a Civil War installation that now has wooded trails
