Buena Vista is a renter-heavy neighborhood with several apartment buildings, but it also has a few different options for buyers. You'll find classic rowhomes, semi-detached twins and fully detached single-family homes from the early to mid-20th century, many of which have been renovated over the years. Yards tend to be modest but functional, and most homes come with off-street parking tucked in the rear. New townhomes and detached builds are mixed in as well, with more construction picking up thanks to the Barry Farm redevelopment just down the road.

A lot of that buzz traces back to the new Bridge District, a mixed-use development within walking distance that's set to bring parks, local businesses and breweries to the Anacostia riverfront.

Within the District of Columbia Public Schools system, Buena Vista's neighborhood schools include Moten Elementary School, Kramer Middle School and Anacostia High School. Moten is part of the Kennedy Center's Turnaround Arts program, which integrates the arts into the classroom to boost student engagement and achievement. Families can apply to other district and charter schools through the My School DC lottery. Commuting from Southeast Washington to downtown and beyond
Buena Vista is walkable, transit-friendly and less than 10 miles from Downtown DC. “Even with the river, it's actually easier to get to D.C. from the southeast side,” Marbury says. “That's huge for people commuting into work daily.” The Anacostia Metro station is a short walk or Metrobus ride away, and from there the Green Line gets you to Navy Yard in under 5 minutes and L'Enfant Plaza in about 10. You can easily transfer lines from L’Enfant Plaza to reach downtown or Capitol Hill. Metrobus routes and Capital Bikeshare stations make shorter trips convenient, too. Drivers have quick access to the Anacostia Freeway, which connects to the Capital Beltway for trips around the metro area.
Parks and trails within walking distance of Buena Vista
Parks, trails and riverfront green space are all a short walk away. The playground and basketball court at Savoy Elementary School are open to the public during non-school hours, and the Suitland Parkway Trail runs through the neighborhood with a paved path for biking, running and walking. Nearby Fort Stanton Park has a playground, basketball courts, a rec center and an outdoor pool. Anacostia Park is another local favorite where you can hop on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail for a longer stroll or bike ride along the water.
