Antique trees and stately homes in Washington, D.C.
From his office, Realtor Robert Hryniewicki can see the mature timbers that blanket Wesley Heights. Homes have stood in the upscale Washington, D.C., neighborhood since the 1920s, but many of the trees shading those large neo-colonials and Tudor Revivals predate the community. “This is one of those neighborhoods where you have antique trees that were here before everything got subdivided,” explains Hryniewicki of HRL Partners at Washington Fine Properties. “Then some were planted in the ‘20s and ‘30s; they’re now 70 feet tall.” The neighborhood’s grand estates and genteel landscape have attracted wealthy and influential residents for decades. That includes former President Richard Nixon, who lived in Wesley Heights when he was vice president. Hryniewicki says the northwest Washington, D.C., neighborhood acts as a transition between the urban lifestyle downtown and the suburban communities outside the district's urban core.

‘Trails galore’ in Wesley Heights
Three sides of the neighborhood are edged by woodlands and parks, crossed by more than 4 miles of trails. “There are trails galore,” Hryniewicki says. Trails wind through Battery Kemble on the west side; soldiers and cannons overlooked the Potomac River from this site during the Civil War, but today it’s a common sledding destination in the winter and dog walking in the warmer months. Other surrounding greenspaces include Wesley Heights Trail and Glover Archbold Park. Rather than exploring parks, locals can explore the modern art galleries at The Kreeger Museum half a mile from Wesley Heights. Residents are within walking distance of National United Methodist Church, a congregation that started in the 1800s with the help of a donation from Abraham Lincoln.

Spacious estate homes on the south side
The north side features some condos and townhouses, along with detached homes that were built close together. South of Cathedral Avenue, houses span large, manicured lawns. These estates may be more than 10,000 square feet in size. American University sits to the north, but Hryniewicki says the private school’s thousands of students aren’t a concern for Wesley Heights residents. “All the kids live on campus, and you have a bit of a buffer with Horace Mann Elementary School and National United Methodist Church in between.” Condos prices start around $230,000, while townhouses begin at $825,000. However, detached houses command price tags starting at $1.5 million, with homes selling for as much as $11.5 million.

Dining along New Mexico Avenue
Residents can get a meal close to home on New Mexico Avenue. A pair of mixed-use buildings sit along the street, housing restaurants such as Chef Geoff’s. The refined American eatery is known for its 32-ounce beer mugs. Locals can also stop along the avenue to grab coffee from Starbucks or sundries from Walgreens. Grocery runs may require a mile-long trip to Whole Foods Market. Specialists and emergency care doctors are less than 2 miles from Wesley Heights at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
