West Chicago address, St. Charles schools
On the outskirts of St. Charles in the Chicagoland suburbs, Cornerstone Lakes is a residential community where contemporary subdivisions face old farm fields along the state Route 64 corridor, just north of DuPage County’s general aviation airport and a sprawling industrial business park. . “The number one thing I tell those who want to buy here is that you’ll have a North Chicago address but access to St. Charles schools,” says Katie Fish, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who also lives in Cornerstone Lakes. Niche ranks the St. Charles school district as the 24th best in the state out of more than 400, and it’s rated an A-plus. While most of the single-family homes in the area were built around 20 years ago, the community has continued to grow and evolve. In 2024, developers opened a new 320-unit apartment complex next to the largely vacant Charlestown Mall. There’s still a movie theater and a department store at the mall, which has been otherwise shuttered since 2017. But the landscape could soon change, as the city officials and developers have envisioned plans to replace the dead mall with apartments, townhouses, restaurants, stores and a public amphitheater.

The school also has an average graduation rate of 95%

Fishing at Cornerstone Lakes Park
Next to Norton Creek Elementary School is the 41-acre Cornerstone Lakes Park. “I take advantage of the walking path frequently,” Fish says. Walkers and bikers use the path to go around the pond or hook up with another path that heads north to the nearby suburb of Wayne. Community soccer leagues play on fields at the park, and catch-and-release fishing is allowed in the pond, stocked with carp, bluegill, northern pike, and catfish. Dunham Forest Preserve is north of the neighborhood and is on over 200 acres that was once used for agriculture. Today, visitors can explore prairies and wetlands, and birdwatchers and nature lovers scan along trails and skyward for rare species, like northern harriers and marsh birds. There are also over 150 types of flowers in the prairie. The neighborhood is also between St. Andrews Golf and Country and the Royal Fox Country Club.

The DuPage Airport is close to the neighborhood but only generates a little noise for those living in Cornerstone Lakes. “It’s not a very busy airport - there is the occasional corporate aircraft that uses it, and the site is used for helicopter training,” Fish says. “We get more noise with the occasional jets flying into O’Hare International Airport,” about 32 miles east of St. Charles. The closest Metra commuter rail station is in West Chicago, 6 miles away. The line reaches the Ogilvie Transportation Center downtown in about 50 minutes.
