Just east of the Sheyenne River, the Southside neighborhood has been a welcoming home to families for several generations. "When we first moved here, Southside was the southern part of West Fargo but now it's moved to more of the central part," says Clark Jahnke, pastor at nearby St. Andrew Lutheran Church. While some of the city's more recently developed areas are cut off from local amenities by major roads like Interstate 94, Southside lends itself to family-friendly, convenient living with parks and an elementary school within walking distance, plus the added benefit of nearby shopping and dining options. Just over 6 miles from Downtown Fargo, "Southside is congenial for families: it's close to the city but not in it," says Jahnke.
Affordable ramblers right by the Sheyenne
Housing in Southside represents a mix of different time periods, with some of the oldest builds along the river dating as far back as 1940. While some of these older, wooded lots have long driveways and expansive, landscaped properties, most homes in the neighborhood can be found grouped together along straight, residential streets. Built throughout the late '60s and early '70s, these ranch-style homes tend to sell from as low as $220,000 to $300,000 dollars, which is significantly lower than the average for the greater Fargo area. For those looking for something smaller there are also two to three-bedroom townhouses available here, which sell from about $120,000 to $175,000 dollars. Adding to the mix, Southside is also home to a range of recently constructed apartment options, including one of West Fargo's tallest apartment buildings.

West Fargo public schools within walking distance
South Elementary School, which earns a B rating from Niche, is a nearby educational option for young students. Walking paths lead through the neighborhood right to the school, so students don't have to walk along any major roads to get there. Older students move on to Cheney Middle and West Fargo High, which are both within a few miles of Southside and also earn B ratings. West Fargo High offers a low student-to-teacher ratio of just 13:1 and a local community that has been part of the school since 1986. Folks from around town often come out to support the school's athletics, ranging from soccer and football to hockey, track and baseball.

Popular parks right in the neighborhood
Within the neighborhood, Southside residents have several parks to choose from. Cass County Park is the go-to spot for youth for its playground and basketball court. Along 7th Avenue, folks will find the Veterans Memorial Pool. Owned by the city, this pool is popular throughout the West Fargo area for its waterslides and splash pad. "We get quite a few people but it's laid-back. Nice for the parents, you know. It's a family-oriented pool," says Karen Kraft, manager at Veterans Memorial Pool. When it gets too cold to swim, Tintes Park is right beside the pool and features tennis courts, a playground and an outdoor hockey rink that gets a fresh sheet of ice every winter.

Rec on the Go events for West Fargo community
In July, the West Fargo Park District brings a Pool Party event to Veterans Memorial Pool to gather the community and help people get to know each other. The event is part of a larger Rec on the Go initiative that opens up the area's parks for events and highlights some of the area's best amenities. "Everyone has a great time and it's really busy," says Kraft, explaining that games and food are set up out in the park's hockey area for all ages to enjoy.

Getting around the Southside neighborhood
While well-connected sidewalks make the local Southside area walkable, cars are necessary for getting around the greater area. When commuting the 6 miles to downtown, Interstate 94 provides a quick option, getting folks there in about 15 minutes. When traveling out of state, Hector International Airport is just a few miles north of downtown, while in the case of a medical emergency, Sanford Medical Center is just south of the interstate.
