Suburban balance outside Pittsburgh
Characterized by The Stacks, a landmark in the historic Steel Valley, West Homestead is a borough just south of Pittsburgh city limits, right across the Monongahela River from Hazelwood. Split between residential and commercial properties, folks here benefit from quiet suburban streets and easy access to shopping, dining and outdoor recreation.

“Half as much” for charming homes
The median year built for properties in West Homestead is 1930, so homebuyers can find residences built as early as 1899 and as late as the tail-end of the 1970s. Century-old Victorians and American Foursquares are primarily found on the borough’s northwest side, closer to the commercial areas on smaller lots. Multifamily properties are more popular as well on that end, often comprising large, boxy brick-faced buildings that have been divided up into units. The borough’s southeast side, branching off Fieldstone Drive, is home to midcentury charm that echoes through raised ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and bungalows. Driveways are also standard on this end of West Homestead. Overall list prices range from $37,000 to $263,000. “In general, in Pittsburgh, you got higher price neighborhoods,” says Kim Stotlemyer, a local Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “Like average sales for single-family are around $200,000 to $250,000. Over here, just outside the city, you could be paying half as much and still get a very nice home.”
Many homes here sit atop hills and have long stairways to the front porch.
Residents take pride in their historic homes and maintain classic architecture.

Sandcastle Water Park
In the summertime, Sandcastle Water Park is the place to be, and the view of the Monongahela River from the top of one of its tube slides is one of the best in the neighborhood. Folks can swim in the wave pool, dive into swimming pools or just float down the lazy river. West Homestead also features Calhoun Park, a year-round green space with picnic tables, swings and a ball field. Additionally, there are avenues for hiking and biking around the neighborhood. “The Great Allegheny Passage runs through West Homestead, Homestead and Munhall,” Stotlemyer says. “It’s part of a route that runs between Pittsburgh and Washington D.C., I think. It’s popular for hikers and bikers.” The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile trail that runs from Pittsburgh, PA, to Cumberland, MD, where the adjoining C&O Canal Towpath allows bicyclists to extend their ride to D.C.

The Waterfront
The Waterfront is a large outdoor shopping complex on the Monongahela River with well-known retailers like LOFT, Bath & Bodyworks, Carhartt and Burlington. Delectable eateries dapple this mall, including Fudge Farm, a small shop with a menu of sweets and cold treats. A Pittsburgh area chain, Burgatory, has a location at the Waterfront as well. This spot is a popular lunch and dinner hub thanks to its custom-creation menu, which lets folks build their dream burgers. Local moviegoers flock to the AMC Waterfront 22 for the latest flicks. Of course, shopping around the Waterfront isn’t just for leisure; Target and Giant Eagle Supermarket have locations around it, making the area convenient for running errands.

Commuting from West Homestead
It’s less than a 10-mile commute from West Homestead to downtown Pittsburgh and a little more than 5 miles to the nearest airport, Allegheny County Airport. Access to Interstate 376 is about 4 miles due north, but there are numerous ways of getting downtown. Folks can easily avoid the highway during rush hour. As for carless commutes, PRT bus stops sit along Main Street.
West Homestead residents can catch the PRT on 8th Avenue.
Some bus stops have seating so folks can take a load off while they wait.
