A small hamlet with an eclectic history
Hidden in the mountainous Catskills Park and bordering the expansive Ashokan Reservoir, West Hurley is a quiet residential hamlet about 3 miles south of Woodstock. West Hurley is one of three hamlets in the Town of Hurley and, like Woodstock, has an art scene steeped in history. At the turn of the 20th century, Hervey White founded the Maverick Art Colony, a utopian community for artists and bohemians. “My grandmother was a part of the Maverick colony, and my grandfather was also involved in the arts,” says Laurie Ylvisaker, associate broker at Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty, who has been in the industry for nearly 40 years. “They started the Maverick Festival in order to raise funds for necessities. It was essentially the original Woodstock.” The tales of a white stallion roaming free around Colorado, referred to by locals as the Maverick Horse, inspired White’s naming of the colony. West Hurley’s tranquil landscape still attracts a range of artists today, along with residents seeking out quiet tree-lined streets, abundant outdoor recreation, and proximity to all Woodstock offers.
The Maverick Concerts
Over a century later, the riotous Maverick festival has transformed into a sequence of low-key musical performances. The annual Maverick Concerts is the nation’s oldest-running concert series. Every Saturday throughout the summer, music seeps out from the Maverick Concert Hall. Its wooden structure accents acoustics just the right way while a towering horse sculpture stands in the corner.
The Maverick Concerts may be the community’s most famous event, but West Hurley hosts a range of small-town festivities throughout the year. The West Hurley Library’s summer reading program offers weekly activities like visits from magicians and animal rescuers. A few blocks away, the local firehouse hosts pancake breakfasts with the Easter Bunny and Touch-A-Truck events. Summer festivities include occasional outdoor movie nights and Tuesday morning yoga classes.
Views of the Ashokan Reservoir
West Hurley borders the Ashokan Reservoir, whose crystal-clear waters and surrounding trails offer picturesque landscapes for hikers and bikers along the 11.5-mile Ashokan Rail Trail. New York City officials built the reservoir to supply clean drinking water to residents, and five different hamlets were flooded for its creation. Other hamlets like West Hurley were relocated. “People still make jokes that they can see the tops of old buildings and church towers in the water,” says Alex Stier, associate broker with Keller Williams Realty, Hudson Valley North, who has nearly 30 years of experience. Swimming is prohibited, but permit-holders can hunt and fish.
The nearby Onteora Lake seems insignificant compared to the 8,315-acre reservoir, but its hiking paths, campsites and calm waters make it popular amongst kayakers, bass fishermen and nature enthusiasts. About 3 miles north, Thorn Preserve is just one small area of the 700,000 acres of land that is protected through the Catskill Center’s conservation efforts. Sixty acres of open meadows with mowed walking paths and flat terrain for strolls await while blooming wildflowers add a dash of color to a sea of green. The Thorn is also home to rescued bee hives that help pollinate local flora. As bee populations decline, the Catskill Center has relocated at-risk hives in areas that use industrialized agricultural practices like pesticides.
Additional hiking trails like the Overlook Fire Tower weave through the Catskills. A 2-mile hike leads to an abandoned fire tower on Overlook Mountain and offers panoramic views. The West Hurley Park is the closest public park with playgrounds and sports courts, about 3 miles south. Residents can also head about 4 miles north to Woodstock Community Center.

Modest homes on tree-lined streets

Holistic learning at Zena
The Onteora Central School District serves the students of West Hurley and earns a B-plus rating from Niche. Kindergarteners through third graders may attend the B-plus-rated Woodstock Elementary, while fourth through sixth graders may attend the B-minus-rated Bennett Elementary. Onteora Middle School earns a B-plus, and Onteora High School not only earns an A-minus, but is ranked the second-best public high school in Ulster County by Niche.
The Zena Democratic School, formerly the Hudson Valley Sudbury School, is a sought-after alternative school emphasizing autonomy and freedom of choice amongst students. Additional private schools include the Woodstock Day School and the Middle Way School, whose teachings are rooted in Buddhism. “At the Way School, kids learn conflict resolution skills from a young age," Ylvisaker says.
Onteora High School has 413 students 87% of which are at least proficient in math.
Reginald Bennett Elementary School has 237 students with a student-teacher ratio of 7 to 1.

Local businesses along Route 28
New York State Route 28 is scattered with small shops like Cheese Louise and The Wine Hutch, a Dollar General and small takeaway joints. In town, a handful of businesses, including an art gallery and a holistic veterinarian hospital, line Route 28. Woodstock Art Exchange’s bright red facade attracts curious visitors on the way to Woodstock, while its interior showcases a mix of eclectic masterpieces from local artists and handblown glass decor. About 1 mile away, West Hurley is home to Hannaford, the only chain grocer around for miles. However, independently owned shops like Sunflower Market, a natural foods store that sells organic products and wellness supplements, is just 3 miles away in the heart of Woodstock.
Blue Mountain Bistro-to-Go is a hidden gem where the aroma of freshly baked goods fills the air. Delicious sandwiches like Tuscan chicken paninis and gourmet catering menus overshadow its no-frills interior. A couple of miles away, Hotel Dylan is one of the few hotels around Woodstock, and sits right next to Santa Fe, West Hurley’s only restaurant. Colorful Mexican cuisines like barbacoa short rib tacos topped with adobo sauce, cilantro, avocados and cheese stand out against its casual neutral decor.
About 3 miles away, Woodstock’s Tinker Street is lined with eateries. Upscale restaurants like Silvia and Good Night revel in their fresh, farm-to-table cuisine and are favorites amongst locals. “They’re some of the best restaurants in the entire region,” says Sean Zimmerman, associate broker at Halter Associates Realty Inc., who has been helping homeowners sell their homes for over 20 years. Live music seeps into the streets from casual joints like the Pearl Moon, while Garden Cafe is known for its quaint patio and vegan eats like buffalo cauliflower tacos.

Getting around West Hurley
One Ulster County Area Transit and Trailways bus stop sits at the intersection of New York State Route 28 and Route 375. The Trailways bus also stops along Maverick Road, catering to day-trippers and tourists. With limited public transportation, West Hurley is a car-dependent community. Interstate 87 leads 70 miles north to Albany International Airport and 100 miles south to the heart of Manhattan. Woodstock’s eateries and entertainment options are about 3 miles north, and Kingston’s HealthAlliance Hospital is about 9 miles away.
