West Texas community centered around the oil and gas industry
A suburb of Odessa, West Odessa sits at the heart of the Permian Basin, one of the world's largest oil and gas-producing regions. "Job opportunities in the energy industry attract new residents to West Odessa and drive much of the local economy," says Yvonne Rosas, a Realtor with eXp Realty. Major energy companies and construction firms make up around 30 percent of all jobs in the Odessa-Midland area, but renewable energy manufacturers are also finding a home here.
West Odessa’s population has held steady since 2020, at around 32,000, despite the ups and downs of the local economy. "The area is also known for its resilience, weathering economic shifts tied to the energy sector over the years," Rosas says. "When jobs become scarce, locals organize fundraisers, food drives, and support networks to help families in need."

Home prices tied to the energy sector
The West Odessa median home price is $300,000, lower than the national and state median. Rosas notes that the housing market here has remained relatively affordable, but prices can fluctuate. “Home prices and rental demand tend to rise when the energy sector is booming, and slow down when the industry experiences downturns," she says. Housing options vary and include modest manufactured homes, midcentury ranch-style homes and expansive, million-dollar mansions. There are also new-construction homes in the $350,000 to $600,000 range. In some communities here, like Ranch Acres and Knox Village Ranchettes, homeowners have plenty of acreage to raise farm animals. "West Odessa isn't as defined by traditional neighborhoods as Odessa itself, but certain areas are popular for their larger lots and more rural feel," Rosas says.

West Odessa is served by the Ector County Independent School District, which serves 33,000 students and earns a B-minus from Niche. Odessa High, which receives a C, is known for its marching band, with 84 consecutive years of University Interscholastic League (UIL) Superior Division One Ratings in Texas. The school is also big on football: Odessa High is the rival to Permian High, the inspiration for “Friday Night Lights.” “Sports, especially football, play a big role in school pride and community involvement," Rosas says.

The next closest park is Floyd Gwin Park, about 10 miles away in Central Odessa, offering sports courts and a playground. The Odessa Paintball Club is an outdoor paintball venue with various fields and obstacle courses.
