History, culture and retail are the draws to White Horse

The stamp of George Washington is impressed upon White Horse – down to the neighborhood’s name. There’s a roundabout in the center of town where Broad Street and Bordentown Road meet, supposedly the legendary crossroads that Washington rode through on his way to inauguration. A 10-foot statue now marks the roundabout, paying homage to the first president’s trusty white steed. “They do re-enactments of Washington crossing the river, if you’re a history buff,” says Rana Bernhard, a real estate agent with Weichert Realtors, speaking of Trenton, the capital city of New Jersey, roughly 5 miles north. “Washington Crossing State Park is also a great place to catch concerts.” As a suburb of Trenton, the neighborhood of White Horse isn’t just about history, but also culture, retail convenience and transportation amenities.

Midcentury styles compete with modern traditionals from the 2000s

Prices for homes in White Horse start around $200,000 for small boxy ranch-styles and cottage-like bungalows, extending up to the low $400,000s for that genre. But within that price span, homebuyers will occasionally see other midcentury homes, like colonials and split-levels. In any case, the layout presents a suburban character, with homes placed back on the lot, reached by a driveway. Shrubs and hedges hug the front of the home, while mature trees hang out to the back or side, framing the property. But things are changing in White Horse: Modern traditional homes from the 2000s and even the 2020s have popped up, selling in the $500,000 to $700,000 range. This is giving White Horse more of a planned development look, compared to the traditional leafy suburban properties previously mentioned. "These houses are very competitive, and many of them are selling for well over their asking price," says Stefanie Prettyman with Keller Williams Premier. "Still, buyers are getting more bang for their buck in White Horse."

Little League baseball at Sunnybrae Park

Sharp’s Lane Crestwood Park is an elongated space surrounded by homes, featuring multiple play structures, a tennis court and a short walking path. Just on the other side of Interstate 195 is Sunnybrae Park, which is primarily used for Little League baseball games. These are smaller parks geared towards leisure times and athletic activities, but for a more immersive experience, residents can go to Roebling Memorial Park on the west end. This is freshwater marshland where visitors can hike, fish and kayak. Other activities include observing wildlife and checking out local landmarks, like a concrete staircase that once led to a Victorian-era amusement park on site.
