Prospect Park offers suburban charm in White Plains

Prospect Park is a small residential neighborhood in White Plains that borders Scarsdale. Residents have access to excellent public and private schools. As part of south-central Westchester County, Prospect Park offers a suburban environment north of New York City. The neighborhood is about 30 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, and commuters can make the trip by train or car.

Types of homes in Prospect Park

Residents can enter the neighborhood from West Post Road or Soundview Avenue. “There are stone pillars at the entryways that say, ‘Prospect Park,’” says Debra Hoch, a real estate salesperson at Houlihan Lawrence and longtime White Plains resident. “It’s a very unique neighborhood, and one of the older neighborhoods [in White Plains].” Driving along the narrow roads lined with hedges and leafy trees, you’ll pass by 20th-century homes of varying architectural styles. Midcentury and Victorian-style residences sit on spacious lots. Single-family homes range from the upper $800,000s up to about $2.6 million, depending on size. Co-ops range from about $100,000 to the mid-$300,000s.

Getting around the metro area by train, car and bus

The commuter train route that goes to Manhattan’s Grand Central Station is the Harlem line on the Metro-North Railroad. There are two stops within 2 miles of the neighborhood: White Plains and Hartsdale. Passengers can reach the city within about an hour. Prospect Park sits along Route 22, which leads north to downtown White Plains and south to the Bronx. The Bee-Line bus system makes stops along West Post Road and takes passengers across Westchester County.

Things to do in White Plains

Downtown White Plains is 2 miles away, or about a 10-minute drive, where diners will find restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, from Greek to Colombian to Japanese. The Westchester is an indoor mall with upscale retailers like Neiman Marcus and Tiffany & Co. Nightlife downtown comes in the form of bars, lounges and beer halls. “They do have a farmers market from the spring to the fall every Wednesday, and there are some parades in town,” Hoch says, adding that such community events give the city a “small-town feel.”

What attracts people to Prospect Park

“Even though we have 65,000 people as full-time residents, there is a sense of community,” Hoch says about White Plains. “People have lived here for generations.” Compared to some other suburban neighborhoods in White Plains, Prospect Park is a smaller subdivision, offering more of a close-knit feel. The ages and styles of the homes also contribute to making Prospect Park unique. Homes here date back to the early 1900s, offering well-maintained, older styles with Victorians, Tudors and Colonial influences.
