Submerged in the beautiful nature of Montgomery County, Whitemarsh Township is a leafy suburb adorned by mature trees that branch out from several green spaces. The nearby Fort Washington State Park steeps the township in Revolutionary War history. But it’s not just the historic roots that locals love about the area; it’s the community spirit. Realtor Sharon Laudenbach with Compass says she moved to Whitemarsh with her husband 25 years ago and has never looked back. “Once we got involved in the community, we decided we never wanted to leave,” Laudenbach says. “It’s a really nice place to raise a family with deep roots. People who live here embrace it and stay their whole lives.” Surrounded by golf courses, the great outdoors, popular retirement communities and highly rated schools less than 20 miles from Philadelphia, Whitemarsh Township attracts golf lovers, nature enthusiasts, and Center City commuters.

A golfer and hikers paradise in Whitemarsh
Shades of green make up the majority of Whitemarsh’s landscape. Whitemarsh Township is truly a golfer’s paradise, surrounded by five picturesque golf courses, like Union League Liberty Hill, Philadelphia Cricket Club and White Marsh Valley Country Club. “They’re all pretty desirable courses. I have some friends that dream of playing at the cricket club,” says Suzi King, local Realtor with Keller Williams Real Estate Media, who has 20 years of experience in the area. Fort Washington State Park, a 493-acre oasis, offers activities ranging from bird watching on the observation deck to hiking, camping, or playing disc golf with friends. More trails await at Wissahickon Valley Park and the Schuylkill Center. Those who prefer hues of blue over green can explore the Schuylkill River Trail or kayak along its flowing waters. Miles Park is another popular spot with a playground and several sports facilities. LEGOLAND Discovery Center Philadelphia and Movie Tavern Flourtown are also close by for chilly weekends spent indoors.

Local eateries along Germantown Pike
Along Germantown Pike, Ye Olde Ale House is a local staple famous for its roast beef sandwiches and craft beer. Next door, From The Boot is known for its authentic Italian cuisine, and the Flourtown Farmers Market features 14 different food vendors. Locals can pick up gourmet products at The Market of Lafayette Hill. Other grocers like Giant are along Bethlehem and Ridge Pike. “People here love that we’re so close to everything,” Laudenbach says. “Whitemarsh has a lot, but we’re also really close to fun places like Conshohocken, Chestnut Hill and King of Prussia, which offer even more things to do.” Casual and upscale eateries like Jasper’s Backyard and The StoneRose line the streets. “Southern Cross and Gypsy Saloon are town favorites. They’re both owned by the Conshy Girls Restaurant Group and have a family feel where everyone knows each other when you walk in,” King says. The Great American Pub is another hot spot for drinks after work. Further west, Metroplex Mall features major retailers, and IKEA is down the road, but King of Prussia has one of the area’s largest malls, King notes.

Historic attractions and community events
Annual events like Whitemarsh Township Day lead to crowds enjoying carnival rides, games, live music and various food vendors. The town also celebrates the Fourth of July with a massive parade along Germantown Pike, ending with a community picnic at Miles Park. Apart from seasonal festivities, residents can enjoy numerous nearby historic sites and museums year-round. At The Highlands Mansion and Gardens, admire the blooming flora or dive into history with a tour of the 18th-century Georgian mansion. Down the road, Historic Hope Lodge is another 1700s estate that offers colonial re-enactments. Others can peruse works of art in a Victorian mansion at Woodmere Art Museum. The Morris Arboretum & Gardens of the University of Pennsylvania is another famous historic estate for afternoons spent in nature.
St. Thomas Church
Whitemarsh Township is home to St. Thomas Church, an Episcopal church that opened its doors in 1698. As the 17th oldest running church in the country, its 42-acre property is full of historic landmarks. The grounds also feature a one-mile walking path open to the public and a private preschool.

Brimming with nature preserves and golf courses, Whitemarsh Township is full of wooded, winding backroads, making this community highly car-dependent. However, city commuters have about a 30-minute commute from three nearby SEPTA rail line stations: Fort Washington, Miquon and Spring Mill. “Interstates 476 and 76 are two of our major highways, so you can get pretty much anywhere around the metro area,” King says. Philadelphia International Airport is less than 30 miles away on Interstate 476, and Center City is about 17 miles away via Interstate 76. Other essential establishments like Chestnut Hill Hospital and Jefferson Flourtown Urgent Care are nearby.
