New Hanover Regional Medical Center is central to the Glen Meade neighborhood.
A neighborhood near the medical park
Located next to Wilmington Medical Park, Glen Meade is an affluent neighborhood with a convenient commute for many of its residents. “The neighborhood draws in a lot of nurses and doctors,” says Sean Skutnik, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty, who has lived in Wilmington since the late 1980s. Larger homes on big, leafy lots define the neighborhood. “If people want a cookie-cutter neighborhood, Glen Meade is where they go, or hope to go,” Skutnik says. “There’s not a lot for sale there because it’s only so big, and it’s pretty desirable for the people who can afford it.” While the neighborhood may feel more residential, multiple shopping and dining destinations are just a few miles away.
Two story homes are found in many Glen Meade neighborhoods.
Southern estates on leafy lawns
Colonial-Revival, traditional and Williamsburg-style homes dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. A tall, dense tree canopy and large, round bushes provide privacy. “It’s considered older Wilmington,” Skutnik says. “It has bigger properties, very Southern estate type of homes.” Single-family homes sell for $525,000 to just over $1 million, depending on square footage ranging from around 2,000 to 3,800 square feet. There are a few condo communities in the neighborhood, including Drayton Square. They typically cost between $450,000 and $600,000. There are a few lots available for building that go for around $500,000. In 2023, 11 total homes sold.
According to Niche.Com, New Hanover High School has a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1.
Helping students prepare for higher education
Alderman Elementary School earns a B on Niche, while Williston Middle scores a B-minus. New Hanover High is the oldest high school in Wilmington and scores a B-plus. It offers the Lyceum Academy, an interdisciplinary program designed to help students build skills and prepare for higher education. The Lyceum Academy is located in New Hanover High but is open to all juniors and seniors in the county.
Paddle boating is a popular option at Greenfield Park.
Heading to the beach or Greenfield Lake
To the east of the neighborhood, Piney Ridge Nature Preserve is home to the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Garden. In addition to seeing the venus fly traps and other carnivorous plants, there are walking trails and a scenic overlook. Greenfield Park is a 190-acre green space where Wilmingtonians can kayak across Greenfield Lake or explore the 5-mile hike-and-bike trail and spot egrets, turtles and alligators. Away from the water, the park offers a skate park, tennis courts and pickleball courts. The closest beach is Wrightsville Beach, an approximately 10-mile or 20-minute drive, depending on traffic. “It’s definitely one of our more affluent beaches,” says Jake Wyer, a Broker with eXp Realty. “But it can also become a college beach because of its proximity to the university.” A drive to Carolina Beach will take about 13 to 15 miles, or 20 to 30 minutes. Golfers will find the private, Donald Ross-designed Cape Fear Country Club just north of the neighborhood.
Glen Meade residents shop for top quality apparel and more at Independence Mall's Belk.
Shopping and dining at Independence Mall
Independence Mall is the only enclosed mall in Wilmington and is a less than 2-mile drive from Glen Meade. It features clothing stores like Dillard's, a Lidl grocery store and restaurants, including Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar & Ice Cream Shop. S & L New York Style Deli is just one example of Wilmington’s many locally owned and operated restaurants. While they may be local, their bagels come fresh from New York. The Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center lies west of the neighborhood. Even more shopping and dining options surround the area, including fast-food options, a Walgreens and a Food Lion.
Navigating Glen Meade on bike
The neighborhood is mostly car-dependent because many streets lack sidewalks, but some residents may choose to bike to nearby destinations. Independence Boulevard, which can become congested, borders Glen Meade to the east. In 2024, it was announced that the North Carolina Department of Transportation would extend the boulevard to reduce traffic. There is currently no completion date set. The 6- to 7-mile drive to Wilmington International Airport will take around 13 to 17 minutes.
Glen Meade residents can bike rather than drive to some areas.
Tree-lined streets are a common characteristic of Glen Meade.
