Brick ranch-style homes surrounded by tall trees
Long Leaf Hills is in bustling Midtown, but the neighborhood’s tree cover gives it a quiet and secluded feeling. Properties are shaded by towering pines, mature magnolias and flowering pink azaleas. Three-bedroom midcentury brick ranch-style homes with attached garages or carports dominate the architectural landscape here, spreading out on lots about half an acre in size. However, an outlying cluster of four-bedroom raised ranch-style homes and split-level builds sits on Parkwood Drive. With no HOA, yards are manicured to individual taste, often decorated with small garden beds and shaped shrubs. Of note, driveways in the neighborhood range from pristine concrete slabs to aging pavement or gravel. As for price, the average home value in Long Leaf Hills is below the Wilmington area average of $550,000. Properties typically fall between $300,000 and $500,000. Potential buyers should be aware that hurricanes can hit Wilmington, and the nearby Hewletts Creek has a risk of flooding.Train like a ninja warrior at Long Leaf Park
A neighborhood path takes residents to the expansive Long Leaf Park. This forested green space features nature trails shaded by tall pine trees. With multiple ballfields and courts, this park is often used for exercise. “You’ll see all kinds of groups meeting there,” Bursell says. The Long Leaf Ninja Course, modeled after the obstacles featured on the reality TV game show “American Ninja Warrior,” is a unique feature. Adorno, who’s lived in Wilmington for nearly 15 years, says people love to take their pets to the off-leash dog park. There’s also a splash pad and playground. Golfers can tee off at Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. Famed course architect Donald Ross designed the public 18-hole championship course. “It’s incredibly popular. There are beautiful rolling hills, it’s so well-kept, and the cost for the average person is not sky-high,” Bursell says. Nearby, residents can pay a $10 drop-in fee to swim at the YWCA Lower Cape Fear, which offers water aerobics and swim team programs.Highly rated schools less than 2 miles away
Winter Park Elementary earns a B rating from Niche and has a supportive community. Every student is given school supplies free of charge, and the PTA hosts fundraisers to pay for field trips, ice cream socials and classroom supplies. Roland-Grise Middle gets an A-minus and ranks as the No. 4 public middle school in New Hanover County. John T. Hoggard High receives an A grade and is considered one of the top public high schools in the Wilmington area. All three schools are less than two miles from the neighborhood. Cape Fear Academy, Wilmington Preparatory Academy and Coastal Christian High School are some of the closest private options. The neighborhood is about 2 miles from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the city’s largest university with about 18,000 students and 1,400 employees.
Houses of Worship
There are about a dozen churches in the Midtown area for those seeking a faith community. “When I first moved here, I did my church shopping, and I found that there are a lot of churches that are all about inclusiveness,” Bursell says. “You’ll find a lot of nondenominational, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Catholic churches.”Ride Wave Transit into downtown Wilmington
The main thoroughfares of Oleander Drive and College Road are nearby to reach destinations around the city. “College Road connects to I-40 and goes all the way to Carolina Beach,” says Lewis Adorno, an employee at the nearby Pomegranate Books. Downtown Wilmington is about 5 miles away, and the popular Wrightsville Beach is about 6 miles away. Wilmington International Airport is about a 7-mile drive. Residents can easily catch a ride with Wave Transit, which has three bus routes in the neighborhood. “People want to move to this area if they need public transportation because it’s very accessible and convenient,” Bursell says. Most amenities are not reachable by foot, but a narrow sidewalk along Long Leaf Hills Drive leads into Long Leaf Park. The area’s bike-friendly streets connect the River to the Sea Bikeway, stretching from the Cape Fear River downtown to Wrightsville Beach.Eat, shop and play along Oleander Drive
Businesses big and small line Oleander Drive, and many have cultivated communities. Craft beer lovers head to The Brewer’s Kettle to enjoy a pint before finding a four-pack to take home. Tabletop gamers meet at Cape Fear Games. Or, when they’re hungry, they head next door to play at the Sideboard Café. Residents rave about the eclectic vibe, delicious flavors and low prices at Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn, a local brand since 2000. “They have every concoction of every authentic Mexican food you could ever dream of, and they’ll do things at will if you decide you want to combine a couple of things,” Bursell says. Fast-casual chains, including Cava and Panera Bread, are outside Independence Mall. “It has something for everybody, and there’s never a problem with parking,” Bursell says. Several grocery stores are within a few miles of the neighborhood, including Harris Teeter, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market.
