A rural, recreational town in Southwest Oregon
Tenmile is a small countryside community in Southwest Oregon near the South Umpqua River and the Calapooya Mountains. It’s known for its vast farmland, hay fields and close community. “People who move here are looking for a rural lifestyle,” says David Jaques, Broker/Owner of Al Pine Real Estate 1, who has lived in the area for nearly four decades. “You’ll find lots of people raising cattle and horses.” The neighborhood has one namesake church and gas station, a post office and some single-family homes -- the rest is farmland. The climate is mild, and traffic is basically nonexistent. Residents have easy access to Oregon 42, a main highway leading to cities like Roseburg. “You get to see goats on the way to work, which I think is lovely,” McLeod says. “I was on the way to Portland one day and I was thinking, ‘That’s an interesting looking dog,’ -- turns out it was a goat,” says Melanie McLeod, owner of McLeod’s Lavendar, a local farm. “ Only in Oregon would you see that.”
Tenmile’s countryside charm is perfect for those seeking a quiet, rural way of life.

Horseback riding is another favored activity that most people do at Cougar Ridge Ranch, an equestrian facility. People can learn how to ride at Carey Cathey Cutting Horses, which sells one lesson for $50 and 30 days of lessons for $925. When residents aren’t fishing or riding their horses, they’re hiking the Calapooya Mountains at Euphoria Ridge 5 miles away. There are no traditional parks in Tenmile. In Winston—8 miles away—Harold and Sid Nichols Park has the only boat ramp in the area for easy access to the river. Nearby Riverbend Park has a baseball field, playground, skate park and a 1-mile trail. The park also hosts Riverbend Live!, a six-week summer concert series, and an annual melon festival in September, which includes a watermelon-eating competition, a chili cook-off and camel rides.

Single-family homes with lots of acreage
In Tenmile, 1950s minimal traditional cottages cost between $350,000 and $500,000, depending on acreage and number of bedrooms. People typically have an average of 10 to 20 acres at a minimum,” Jaques says. Homes are separated by farmland and forests full of Douglas Firs, maple, and pine trees. The area is at risk of forest fires due to the proximity of these woods. Oregon insurance code requires every homeowner's insurance policy to include wildfire coverage.

Also, The Douglas Forest Protective Association and Coos Forest Protective Association work with the Oregon Department of Forestry to prevent wildfires.
