A tidy east Wonder Lake subdivision near central amenities
Life is slow and synonymous with lakefront activity in Deep Spring Woods, one of eighteen subdivisions surrounding Wonder Lake. Like neighboring subdivisions to the north, south and across the water, this community includes pocket parks that slide into Wonder Lake, a private 834-acre waterway often dotted with sailboats and jet skis. Town centers in nearby McHenry and Woodstock serve goods and services that are otherwise unavailable, but there are also a few taverns and other local haunts along the rural roads between the neighboring localities
Taking off from neighborhood parks or the Wonder Lake Marina
Three sandy beachfront parks punctuate the shoreline in Deep Spring Woods. Each spot has grassy open space, while two also feature small playgrounds for children. “They can launch their boat right off those beaches, or they can head to the Wonder Lake Marina that takes the boats for you and takes yours out on a barge with a lift,” says Terry Mathews, an agent with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group who has helped many homebuyers and sellers around the lake. Deep Spring Woods is one of two subdivisions closest to this full-service marina, which fills boats up on gas and serves concessions at different times of year. Residents also have the option of heading to the Chain O’Lakes, an interconnected system of large, deep lakes and rivers. “Lakefront owners don’t for the most part, but people who live off the lake are gonna be launching from a public launch, so they could do it on Wonder Lake or the Chain,” Matthews says. “The thing about Wonder Lake is it’s private, so there’s no boat traffic. The Chain has a ton.” Other programs serving Wonder Lake include the Yacht Club and the community's youth soccer, baseball and softball leagues which practice and play home games at Jacobson Park on the west side.

Cozy cottages on rural drives and lakefront properties with piers and walkout basements
Unlike the hilly, winding drives of some west Wonder Lake communities, straight roadways create tidy blocks between East Wonder Lake Road and East Lake Shore Drive in Deep Spring Woods. Veering off these lanes are gravel drives that disappear behind dense thickets of trees, or homes closer to the road surrounded by chain link or wooden fences. It’s not uncommon for homes to include double lots. Swing chairs, stone-bordered gardens and statement trees are common sights. The homes themselves range from gable-front cottages with one to three bedrooms and one bathroom, to larger waterfront properties with walkout basements, one- to two-car garages and separate boat houses. Options usually range from $145,000 to $300,000, depending on size and proximity to the lake.

Heading into McHenry for the essentials
Besides the occasional hot dog at Wonder Lake Marina after a long day on the water, residents have a limited number of local watering holes close to home. They head to Alibi Pub & Grub for appetizers, drinks in plastic cups from the bar and blaring live music at the indoor stage, equipped with updated light and sound systems. A local Dollar Tree and a BP gas station are also around the corner, but locals will have to head into other town centers for more shopping options. “People on the east side tend to go to McHenry, and the west side goes to Woodstock,” Matthews says. The east side's Route 31 corridor contains big names like Jewel-Osco, Aldi, Walmart and Home Depot. The city center is also full of national chains and regional favorites like Rosati’s Pizza and The Village Squire.

Skiiers flip and pile into pyramids for onlookers at Center Park
The Wonder Lake Yacht Club has sailboat races every Sunday during the summer and parades across the water on the 4th of July. Center Park opens to the public on Fridays for the village’s other showstoppers. “The Ski Club puts on shows every Friday night in the summer and on the 4th of July,” Matthews says. "They’re nationally ranked, they have a jump and do pyramids. They’ve got people doing flips off the jump.”
