Woodville is a rural Wisconsin village with a relaxed community
The rural community of Woodville offers residents a slow-paced life, just under an hour from the Twin Cities. Founded by Norwegian settlers in 1870, the village celebrates its heritage every year with the Syttende Mai festival. You can find a handful of local parks and restaurants in the area, as well as an industrial park, but residents often travel to nearby cities like Baldwin and Hudson for shopping and work.

Home prices trend lower than the Twin Cities
Part of what draws people to Woodville is its small-town charm. “It’s a very tight-knit community,” says Julie Wathke, the village clerk and treasurer. This is even reflected in its homes, which are situated close together on quarter-acre or smaller lots near the center of the village. These houses are typically older, including bungalows and Foursquares from the early 1900s. As you move farther out, you’ll see more mid-20th-century properties like split-levels and ranch-style homes. There is also new construction, but most of it is townhouses and duplexes.
“Housing prices are less than in the Twin Cities,” says Karen Furo-Bonnstetter, longtime resident and Woodville Community Library director. “Obviously, that’s always a big draw for people.” While the median price for a single-family home in Woodville is lower than in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, it is slightly higher than in the nearby Glenwood City. Prices for townhouses and single-family homes generally range from the mid-$100,000s to the high $300,000s, but a handful of properties with more acreage have sold for the mid-$600,000s to the low $800,000s.

There is strong broadband in the village, but weaker Wi-Fi farther out
While some properties on the outskirts of the village use well water and septic tanks, most homes have public water and sewage. Similarly, most properties have reliable broadband. The Woodville Community Library offers free Wi-Fi to all residents, so those on more rural properties can still access the internet.

Students attend highly rated Baldwin-Woodville public schools
Most families send their kids to the highly rated Baldwin-Woodville Area School District. While the middle school campus is in Woodville, the elementary and high schools are in Baldwin. The district provides a bus service that stops throughout the region. Wisconsin has open enrollment, so families can apply to schools outside the district.

Residents commute to nearby cities or work at Thompson Industrial Park
Cars are a must in Woodville, but easy access to Interstate 94 and U.S. Route 12 makes commuting easy. Hudson is less than 30 miles away, and it’s only about 50 miles to the Twin Cities. “It’s basically rural, but it’s close enough to the Twin Cities to take advantage of things that go on in Minneapolis and Saint Paul,” Furo-Bonnstetter says. The closest emergency room is at Western Wisconsin Health’s main campus in Baldwin, about 5 miles away. Woodville gets over 50 inches of snowfall a year, but Furo-Bonnstetter says the village does a good job clearing the roads.
While many people commute for work, Furo-Bonnstetter says there is a lot of industry in the area, thanks to manufacturing companies in Thompson Industrial Park.
Fun activities include community parks and the Syttende Mai festival
Like many rural areas, hunting and fishing are popular pastimes in Woodville. “The Eau Galle is the big place to go swimming, fishing and things like that,” Furo-Bonnstetter says. The Eau Galle Recreation Area also has campsites and hiking trails. During the winter, you can ski or ride your snowmobile. There is plenty to do in the village as well, with options like:
Steven Park, which has a softball field, a splash pad and access to the Wildwood Trail
South Steven Park, with an amphitheater that hosts a summer music series
McMillan Park, where amenities include a nine-hole disc golf course and a soccer field
The Woodville Community Library, which hosts programs like book clubs for all ages
Residents also come together for Syttende Mai, a weekend-long festival put on by the Woodville Lions Club every May to celebrate Norway’s Independence Day. “There’s a lot of community involvement with that,” Wathke says. Programming includes a garage sale, farmers market, live music and a parade. Many people look forward to the weekend’s Uff-Da Run, which has a 5K, 10K and half-marathon course. The first-place man and woman each receive a Norwegian Rosemaling plate, a form of folk art.

Locals drive to Baldwin for groceries but eat at Woodville Cafe
While the closest grocery store is 10 minutes away in Baldwin, there are a handful of local businesses in the community. The Smokehouse is a locally owned butcher shop that sells fresh cuts of pork and beef. You can enjoy classic comfort food at Woodville Cafe. “The Woodville Cafe is known statewide because it was featured in the ‘Our Wisconsin’ magazine, so it’s always full,” Furo-Bonnstetter says. Locals meet up for a drink and events like trivia or karaoke at the car-themed Woodville GarageBar.
