Devers offers classic midcentury suburbia within York City
Devers is a neighborhood with multiple names; it’s a collection of starter home subdivisions laid out in the midcentury, so some prefer Fireside after a cozy street naming convention, while others stick to the name found on the neighborhood school at its center. No matter what they’re calling it, though, residents agree on the benefits of living in well-kept single-family homes just off the bustling U.S. Route 30 corridor. “It’s a cute neighborhood, full of Cape Cods. They give it a historic look, but a lot of buyers have renovated the old, boxy rooms, opened the floorplan and given them a more modern look,” says Christina Vargas, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker who has specialized in York, Lancaster and Dauphin counties for 9 years. “It’s one of the primary places to find affordable detached homes in York City. There are some parks in the area – it's a charming place.” In the master-planned suburbia that makes up Devers, residents can enjoy maintaining the look of their own front lawns or mingle with neighbors at the local community garden or latest Devers Area Neighborhood Association event, all within a couple of miles of York’s city center and major Central Pennsylvania commuter highways.
Midcentury starter homes starting at less than $150,000
Classic Cape Cods are a common sight in Devers, as are other simple Minimal Traditional single-family homes that were popular through the 1940s and 1950s. Ranch-style homes and split-levels built through the 1950s and 1960s can offer slightly more square footage, sharing the sidewalks with smaller homes and sitting behind similarly green lawns and tidy landscaping. Prices range from around $140,000 to $260,000. The winding, planned suburban streets laid out in the midcentury are only broken up by a handful of larger buildings in Devers, including the neighborhood’s namesake elementary school and The Village at Kelly Drive retirement community.

Commuting around York City and down U.S. Route 30
The busy Central Pennsylvania regional highway, U.S. Route 30, makes up Devers’ northern border. “Especially after COVID, the market in Lancaster became very saturated and prices got astronomical. A lot of people living in Lancaster moved into York for better affordability, and Route 30 keeps it convenient to travel back and forth,” Vargas notes. Lancaster is nearly 30 miles away, but Route 30 also intersects with Interstate 83 just east, opening access to Harrisburg and Baltimore. County seat hubs in downtown York are around 2 miles from home, and UPMC Memorial Hospital is also a couple of miles away. Though many rely on personal vehicles, rabbittransit buses also make stops on regional routes along Pennsylvania and Roosevelt avenues.
A hidden neighborhood park and larger nearby green spaces
Tucked behind homes on Fahs Street and Kelly Drive, Yorktown Park is a pocket park surrounded by shady trees. Throughout the park’s grounds, some visitors play on the playground or basketball course, while others tend the raised vegetable beds of the Yorktown Community Garden. Just outside Devers, a string of parks sprawls south of Parkway Boulevard, from the playgrounds along Willis Run in Jim Gross Park to the winding trails and tennis courts at Farquhar Park.
You can watch the Great Horned Waterfowls soar above the trees and build their nests at Kiwanis Park.
Devers locals can cast a line at Kiwanis Lake located just access the street from Farquhar park.

Shopping and dining in strip malls on Route 30
The rush of Central PA traffic has brought countless retailers and restaurants to strip malls along U.S. Route 30. Just across the roadway from Devers, Northwest Plaza is anchored by ALDI and Tractor Supply Co. El Rodeo sits within Devers, a local Mexican chain decorated with bright, multicolor hanging banners known for serving sizzling fajitas and ice-cold margaritas. Nearby, diners tuck into ribs at Mission BBQ or join the drive-through queue at national chains like Chick-fil-A and regional delicacies like Maple Donuts.
