Midway, in Adams County, is quiet and settled

Midway is an unassuming Adams County community tucked between the boroughs of Hanover and McSherrystown. Among its quiet, settled residential blocks, you’ll find the occasional park, mom-and-pop shop or highly rated Conewago Valley school. Busier regional roads surround these small-town centers, leading to the manufacturing and distribution centers that make Hanover the snack food capital of the world, and much busier Baltimore commuter highways.

Small-town housing costs from York to Adams counties

“Midway is very small. Like, don’t sneeze when you drive in, because you’re going to be through it,” says Lori Hockensmith, a Realtor with Iron Valley Real Estate who’s specialized in Adams and York counties for nearly 30 years. Quiet blocks of single-family homes sprout from Elm Avenue. Walking down narrow sidewalks, you'll see a range of homes built from the early 1900s through the 1990s, including detached and semi-attached National houses, Victorians, bi-levels and ranch-style homes. Prices range from the upper $100,000s to the lower $300,000s.

Midway is named for its position between the boroughs of Hanover and McSherrystown. Despite how well it blends in with its two neighbors, Midway’s median sale price is in the upper $200,000s, making it a little bit more expensive than both McSherrystown and the Hanover Historic District.

Highly rated Conewago Valley and Hanover schools

Most of Midway is served by the highly rated Conewago Valley School District. Kids might walk to Conewago Township Elementary School, at the intersection of Elm and Linden avenues. A couple of pockets on Midway’s east side are served by the highly rated Hanover Public School District.

Close to mom and pop restaurants, grocery stores and Hanover

Locally owned businesses are scattered around Midway, including the comfortable, no-frills neighborhood bar, Midway Tavern. Firepit Rotisserie & Grill specializes in Mediterranean fare, while Ghouls and Grinds serves coffee shop staples and baked goods with spooky, Halloween-inspired twists. Myers’ Meat Market is nearby, but other grocery stores like Food Lion and Weis Markets are also a short drive away. Center Square, Hanover’s quaint, walkable commercial district, is about a mile from home.

Walkable community parks and nearby recreation destinations

A handful of parks and private businesses are in the area, placing playgrounds, sports courts, athletic fields and an indoor skating rink within walking distance. You might enjoy:

  • Delone Avenue/Moose Recreation Park
  • Myers Memorial Park
  • Magic Elm Skateland
  • Diller Field
Within 5 miles of home, you can find larger recreation destinations like Flatbush Golf Course and Codorus State Park.

Commuting around York and Adams counties or heading to Baltimore

Midway is just west of state Route 94, Hanover’s main artery and a busy regional roadway for south central Pennsylvania. Although many residents drive to get around, a couple of Rabbittransit bus routes stop outside businesses, snack food warehouses and distribution centers along Kindig Lane and Elm Road between McSherrystown and Hanover. Regardless of how you travel, you’re about:

  • 1 mile from UPMC Hanover hospital
  • 15 miles from Gettysburg, the Adams County seat
  • 20 miles from York, the York County seat
  • 50 miles from Baltimore and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport

Midway’s amenities serve everyone from families to retirees

Midway’s quiet residential streets are walkable to parks and highly rated schools, helping to give it a settled and family-friendly feel. It’s also within a mile or so of health care facilities and the McSherrystown Borough Community Senior Center, catering to older residents. “There are a lot of people from other states moving into Pennsylvania in general,” Hockensmith says. “We get a lot of New York and New Jersey retirees because Pennsylvania does not tax retirement like they do.”
