Cottage Grove is a small pocket suburb of Youngstown that is close to the city's amenities yet has its own unique characteristics. "This is an area that offers quality homes for a low price," says 20-year Realtor Debbie Mook of Klacik Real Estate, who is also a nearby resident. "Because the area is more affordable, we see a lot of first-time buyers and investors. Plus, property taxes are really low." Gridded sidewalk-lined streets where oak and maple trees adorn the yards of modest, 100-year-old homes.

Craftsman bungalows occupy most streets, notable for their broad, covered porches. Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, located just outside the boundary, has been a community staple since the 1940s, serving crowd favorites like ice cream cones, shakes and sundaes. Additionally, Southern Park Mall, a major retail destination, offers market-exclusive brands, locally owned specialty shops and a Cinemark movie theater. For a larger variety of entertainment options, Cottage Grove residents can head downtown, where they’ll find trendy bars and restaurants, and renowned museums such as The Butler Institute of American Art.
