North Heights
Historic homes in many styles
North Heights has an eclectic sense of style, with a wide variety of designs to draw in visitors and potential residents. Tudor and Colonial homes stand side-by-side with more contemporary designs like American Foursquare, Bungalow and Cape Cod. "It's a historic area, and they keep up with it," says Erica Winner-Sauceman, who's served the area with Keller Williams since 2020. "You have old charm and custom-built homes. Some have three fireplaces or old boiler systems: pieces of history you rarely see anymore." Well-worn sidewalks crisscross residential zones beneath the shade of mature oak and birch trees. Lawns are standard, though they grow increasingly modest in the southern reaches of the neighborhood. The area's historic nature means that many homes will require some level of renovation, which means anything from a new coat of paint to a new roof! Prices range from the low $20,000s for centennial homes needing serious restoration to the mid $300,000s for well-maintained estates on vast lawns.Sledding at Crandall Park
Found in the heart of the North Heights historic district, Crandall Park is nearly 60 acres of greenery that includes playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic pavilions and wide open spaces of grass for games of tag, sledding in the winter or just a little daydreaming. Originally built in 1924, Rayen Stadium has a proud history of hosting varsity and college football for local high schools and Youngstown State University. Today, it's the home base of the East High School Golden Bears and the Chaney High School Cowboys. The Henry Stambaugh Golf Course offers a 9-hole, 36-par course with a view of the verdant foliage of neighboring Churchill.Golden Dawn: a Youngstown institution
Familiar shopping favorites like Walgreens, Aldi and Save A Lot are readily accessible, while the Southern Park Mall can be found 9 miles south in Boardman. The Bull & Bear offers burgers, pizza and wings with 17 flavors in a casual grille and tavern atmosphere. The family-owned Golden Dawn restaurant in Landsdowne has encapsulated the classic diner and bar experience since it opened over 90 years ago.Live shows at DeYor
Crandall Park is a popular spot for local events, including annual Easter Egg hunts and neighborhood get-togethers. Just south in downtown Youngstown, the DeYor Performing Arts Center is well-known for hosting touring acts, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and shows by local theatre troupes.Football at ROTC at East High
Due to Ohio's policy on open enrollment, students may attend any public school in the area, regardless of their local district. Students can start at Harding Elementary School before attending Chaney Middle School, both of which have a C-minus on Niche. Older students can enroll at East High School, which has a C-minus and takes great pride in its extracurricular groups, including ROTC and athletics. "We've always had an exceptional basketball program," says East High's assistant principal, Henrietta Williams. "And our football team is doing really well, too."3 miles from downtown Youngstown
Centrally located between the major interstate thoroughfares of Ohio State Route 711, U.S. Route 62 and U.S. Route 422, North Heights is convenient to downtown Youngstown, 3 miles south, and Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, less than 2 miles southwest. Public transportation by the Western Reserve Transit Authority is frequently used and provides bus lines all over the Youngstown Metropolitan area.Important to know
The CAP Index lists North Heights’ Homicide score as a 7, above the national average of 4. However, initiatives like those spearheaded by the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation have taken strides in reducing housing blight, pushing for community policing and cleaning up areas of illegal dumping.
