Midtown
Suburban Neighborhood in Ypsilanti, Michigan
Washtenaw County 48197
Victorian homes rented out to students
Homes here date back to the 1850s through to the mid-1900s, most with Victorian, Colonial or Craftsman influences. "Midtown is home to many student rentals," says Realtor Todd Fedie with Keller Williams Realty, who has experience selling all over southeast Michigan. To him, the standout quality of Midtown is the architecture: "You'll see large front porches, castle-like exteriors, and elaborate trim work that have been preserved over the years." Prices in Midtown range from $200,000 to $400,000, typically depending on the size and recency of renovations. Most properties north of Washtenaw Avenue are split into duplexes and are generally rented out to students.Riverside Parks leads over to Depot Town
Directly to the east, Riverside Park has walking trails, playgrounds and open green spaces that make it an ideal place for events. The Michigan Summer Beer Festival has hundreds of local beers to sample, and summer Mondays are filled with the sound of live jazz. Riverside Park's boardwalk bridge passes over into Depot Town, Ypsilanti's other hot spot for city activity. And for longer trips, the park connects to the 35-mile Border to Border Trail, which heads out to Ann Arbor.International education at public schools
Any public school-aged kids are a part of the Ypsilanti Public Schools, which has open choice enrollment across the district and all of Washtenaw County. One nearby option is Ypsilanti International Elementary, which gets a C rating from Niche and has an International Baccalaureate program. From there, kids have priority enrollment for Washtenaw International Middle, rated B-minus, and Washtenaw International High, rated A-plus. But of course, the most relevant school here is Eastern Michigan University, which sits less than a mile from all homes. The University of Michigan over in Ann Arbor is also a draw for at least a few college-aged Midtown residents who are looking for more affordable rentals and willing to brave a longer commute. The growing arts scene at the heart of Ypsi
A collection of galleries and artisan-focused boutiques sits around the Michigan and Huron intersection. One notable stop is the Riverside Arts Center, a community hub offering exhibits and classes for all ages. "I see art as a vehicle for social change," says Riverside's Executive Director Liz Warren. "We try to level the playing field for art education and experiences that are cost prohibitive." Riverside Arts Center is home to the free Ypsi Fine Arts Club, and it runs one of the most affordable summer camp programs in Washtenaw County. Their large theater plays host to dance performances, theater productions, and the Ypsilanti Independent Film Festival. "The art scene here was what drew me to Ypsilanti," says Warren, who has lived in the city for 17 years. "It's such a quirky place where people really care and look out for each other."Getting around without a car in Midtown
With walkable streets and a reliable bus system, a car is optional in Midtown. An express bus was added in the spring of 2024 that provides fast travel up Washtenaw Avenue, with stops at grocery stores and downtown Ann Arbor. However, there is no direct bus line to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. For those heading out the 16 miles to the airport, a rideshare app is a common choice.Bakeries, bars and boutiques
Midtown has the most varied restaurant selection in all of Ypsi. Cross Street is dominated by student favorites, like the Mexican food at STUFD, Thai food at Basil Babe and burgers at the trendy Wurst Bar. Down on Michigan Avenue, Bellflower serves up local ingredients in a contemporary setting, and Bird Dog Bakery was so beloved at the local farmers market that it now has its own brick-and-mortar location. Bobcat Bonnies has one of the best brunch selections in the city, complete with a Bloody Mary bar. Popular choices for a night out include the historic Tap Room, the live music at Ziggy's and the laid-back atmosphere at Ypsi Alehouse. Between the eateries is a quirky array of local bookstores, crystal shops and vintage stores.
